Nice 1990 Olds wagon, owned by us for about 15 years. Driven very little in the past ten years, hence our selling it. I replaced the 305 with a real 350 olds engine because it seemed to have lame acceleration and had trouble passing emissions. Nice rebuild with a high-mileage/low-end torque/smooth idle (very mild) cam. The car is still no screamer, but better; I'm pretty sure that the rear axle ratio is just too high for performance driving, if you chose to do that in a wagon. It had terrible trouble passing emissions back in the day with the factory computer-controlled carburetor, so I changed it to chevy truck TBI and it is the cleanest burning olds wagon in Georgia, but it does not need emission testing anymore. I have thought about changing it over to just plain old carburetion and no computer at all,but the fuel injection really works well. I did buy a new distributor for it that is simple HEI to go with a carb,that can go withthe car.
The paint job that it came with was fantastic, they must have removed every piece of trim and other things because I can't find a hint of overspray. I would do that kind of foolishness myself when painting, but I've never seen it done on a station wagon. The paint is fading on the hood and roof, but still respectable. The left side has some damage at the rear quarter panel, but it is all under the vinyl wood area, so a monkey could bondo it and it not show if you are good at sticking on the fake wood trim. That came with the car. I have a decent sized piece of the wood material, but not enough to do everything unless you have seams here and there. The passenger side looks great so you can still take it on dates and she may never see the dents if you park with that in mind.The wood trim sticker on the tailgate needs replacing from bad fading; there is plenty available for that. I tried to show all the bad things about the car, so you would not get any surprises. No real rust, but some surface rust on a few places underneath, and one rust hole that I show in a pictureon the floor pan where the side window gasket leaked and I took a while to figure it out and fix it. The car is very solid otherwise. I replaced all four door/window gaskets just to be sure. The carpet is pretty stained in my opinion, but the seats are good except for one small hole that came with the car that someone sewed up.
The headliner was replaced just before we got it and is still nice. The power antenna is stuck down, and the radio is a replacement with cd and cassette that I'm not sure if it works anymore since the antenna is down. The car just turned over 170K on the way to work last week, the engine probably only has about 20K on it. The transmission has a rebuilt tag on it, we bought it with maybe 140k on the car so I don't know when that was replaced. Runs and shifts great, although it surges a little a low speeds in the neighborhoods, it is happier in drive rather than overdrive in lower speed driving. Again I think that it would benefit from ahigher gear ratio rear end.
Sometimes when it is parked hot and sits for a few minutes (worst case for under-hood temps) it turns over very slowly. Replaced battery and starter and decided that the timing is a little too advanced, I may try backing off a little. I don't want to lose power and it rarely happens so I've not gotten around to it yet.
The A/C was working but need a charge since it's been years since I've used it.The heater core inlet pipe got a crack so it needs repair or better replacing, I assume that it's a pain in the tusch to do.
Some cool things about the car are the rear facing seats (my kids love them), power rear window, the fiber-optic indicators for letting you know what bulbs are working around the car. It has air shocks and a factory rear stabilizer. We pulled a camper with it but it seemed to run warm with the car full of kids and a loaded camper so I only did that a few times.When you drive it almost always you get comments and smiles. I have kept it as a back-up car for years now, but it has to stay in the weather now and I hate to see it deteriorate. It's a lot of car for the right person, I hope it finds a good home. We live just above Atlanta GA.
The tires have a lot of tread but are getting old and dry looking. Doesn't bother me, but you may want to replace them if you care about safety and stuff like that. The rear door does open both to the side and down flat, and it has a defrost grid (can't remember if it works, never used it).
