1956 PACKARD CARIBBEAN HARDTOP 5697-1237 HISTORY The Packard Caribbean was produced by the Packard Motor Car Company for model years 1953 through 1956. Some of the Caribbean's styling was derived from the Pan American Packard show car of the previous year. It was produced only as a convertible from 1953 to 1955, ut a hardtop model was added in its final year of 1956. The 1956 cars were equipped with a 374 cubic inch V8 with dual Rochester 4GC carburetors that produced 310 Horsepower. The plan was to build 250 units each of the Convertible and Hardtop. A total of 276 Convertibles and 263 Hardtops were manufactured by years end. The 1956 Caribbean Hardtop featured in this auction was purchased by a lifetime Packard owner in 1964 from a used car lot in Cumberland Maryland for $500. He was impressed as a young man by the Packard that then President Herbert Hoover was riding in at a parade. He was a Farmer, rchardist and a State representative for West Virginia. He knew that this car was something special. It was always garaged, sed sparingly and never in inclement weather. Ownership has passed to the mechanic who maintained the car for many years. I am listing the car for him. Some modifications have been made over the years. The problematic push button gear selector was replaced with the standard unit before 1964. The oil pump with the vacuum pump was replaced with the standard oil pump. The 1987 Packard Cormorant article shows only 26 survivors in the registry. This car was not included in that number. CONDITION The 1956 Caribbean Hardtop featured in this auction is a beautiful original car that has been lovingly maintained. It starts with a touch of the key and settles into a smooth idle. The car runs and drives perfectly. The oil pressure is great and it runs cool. The Torsion Level works flawlessly. All of the interior and exterior lights work as do the power antennas. It still sports both of the original Hall Lamp sealed beam headlamps! There is a beautiful original interior that features reversible seat cushions. The longtime owner always had the cloth out. The car was treated to a driver grade repaint and a replacement vinyl top over 20 years ago. Some of the exterior chrome is excellent, ther pieces should be replated. It is all the original parts. The emblems are all Very Nice! I put the car up on a lift for the inspection and the only rust I found was on a bracket on the passenger side quarter panel extension. It is depicted in one of the photos. I think this is probably a result of driving up the owner's long gravel farm lane. Everything on the car operates with the following exceptions. The quarter window motors run, ut the windows do not move, he radio and Clock are inop. The ignition switch is a replacement. The oil pump with the vacuum pump was replaced with the standard pump, new lifters and the oil pan cleaned. The front end was rebuilt with new bushings, ingpins, pper and lower pivots and an alignment performed by an old time front end shop. The car just had a four wheel brake job to include rebuilt wheel cylinders, new frictions and the bearings repacked. There are modern 235X75.15 whitewall radial tires. The original bumper jack and Goodyear Double Eagle spare are present. We took this car out one day last week and put about 60 miles on it. We drove it on Mountain roads and the Highway. It performed flawlessly all day. I think this car could be driven anywhere! It is currently Titled, icensed, nsured and on the road!
