THE REAL DEAL! Grey Market European Car- M110 Straight 6- rare FIVE SPEED Transmission- Rust Free!
Unfortunately my paid storage situation will be changing soon, so I must sell of a BUNCH of cars from my 35+ pc. collection.
This 1985 280SL was the result of a 3 year search by me. I've always been a fan of the R107. I currently have a great 560SL and have owned 560SLs, 380SLs, 450SLs... and euro 300Sls too!
Finding a low mileage, Euro Import, 6 Cylinder MANUAL TRANSMISSION car was and is tough. Yes you do see the super "Concours" cars pop up at the Scottsdale auctions for prices WELL into the $40K range, and you do occasionally see the clapped out high mileage ebay cars sold by dealers... but a real deal EURO car with Euro lights and Euro bumpers... a clean two owner car... was hard to find.
I bought this from an old guy north of Boston. He bought the car from somebody in Pennsylvania. He had the car repsprayed and a brand new top installed, rear end serviced and a new clutch installed. Then he put the top down and never put it up again! The car was never driven in rain and garaged from October to May every year when he went to Florida. I've never seen one with a complete absence of rust and oxidation- but that is this car! Not just "No Rust"... But more importantly- "Never Rusted"!
Now the paint was not a perfect job- it looks good in sunlight but in shade it's not a perfect gloss. There's a K40 Antenna right in the center of the trunklid. Since the car is so rust free I don't think ANYBODY would respray this car at this point- it just looks too good. The top is still almost perfect as installed a few years ago- the cool 70s style blue interior is in wonderful shape- Not sure if it has been retrimmed- but it does look way too clean for 1985.
When I bought the car several years ago I had the Mexican Hat wheels soda blasted, trued and resprayed, and new rubber installed. I had a new exhaust system from Mercedes in German installed, and the fuel injection has been removed and tuned. The car runs unbelievably well. Fires right up first turn and this motor pulls HARD! The difference between a 560Sl and this car is unbelievable- this is more Alfa Spider than 560SL- Feels much MUCH more sporty!
I have the original factory hardtop and factory stand AND factory hardtop cover- all in very good condition as the photos show. The car when viewed from top, bottom, inside and out is devoid of rust. If you want to have a great classic car that will only increase in value- this is the ONE. I have the original owner's manual, a Xeroxed repair manual and a THICK Folder or repair receipts from the past 20 years of ownership! This is a well documented car!
The car currently has a great Blaupunkt radio installed, and the wood on the lower console has been replaced. The other wood is in good condition. A/C is operational but a leak in the supply hose to the compressor means it loses freon very quickly. I drive it with the top down but replacing this hose and charging the A/C should be fairly inexpensive, and I can confirm that everything else in the system appears to function OK.
As values increase on these I could see a future owner putting a really good paint job on this and replacing some of the scratched window trim on the doors, but the car is very presentable as-is and gets many thumbs up and questions at service stations!
This car is sold AS-IS with no warranty, but I do drive it every other day so expect the quoted mileage to be a touch higher. I would not be afraid to fly in and drive this thing ANYWHERE! Ebay does not accept Euro VIN so the correct vin is WDB1070421A024573
I think my Buy It Now price is VERY fair. I could see a dealer selling this exact car for north of $18K, and with a new paint job I could see this car EASILY being a $30K auction car!
