1976 Ford LTD Fleet Package
Today I am offering up for sale my 1976 Ford LTD Fire Chief car. This car was originally purchased by a very small Fire Department back in 1976 in North Carolina from what I was told (Siler City, still have the metal fleet key tag). The car was in service until the late 80’s and then was auctioned off as surplus. I know that after the auction it has changed hands a couple times and I purchased the car about a year ago off an owner that provided me with the history about the car.
The car is extremely solid, as expected with a southern car, and is also very straight. The car has obviously been repainted before and evidence of that can be found around the trim pieces and panel seems. It does have some scratches and chips in the paint all over with the worst chips being on the driver side doors as seen in the photos. The underneath of the car is very clean and the body only has a couple small spots where some surface rust is evident along the rear window on the drip rails (as seen in photos). Remember that this car is 43 years old and is not perfect by any means. The chrome is in ok condition with pitting on the top of the bumpers like all these old 70’s Fords.
The car runs and drives very well and it has the 351M V8 with the three speed automatic transmission. The engine is very quiet in the car and again it runs very good. The car will start right up with one pump of the gas pedal but does need to warm up for about a minute when cold out or it will stall when you place it into drive. The car obviously hasn’t received a tune up in some time and I’m sure that one would probably make this V8 purr even smoother than it already does. The car has new front brake pads and it looks like a new rotor and brake hose also on the front.
This is a stripped down model with crank windows and vinyl interior. It does have power brakes and power steering but that is about it. The car also does have the fleet package power steering cooler that only the police package cars came with. The car does not have a radio or clock in it and I don’t know if it ever did but none exists now. I do have a 1976 Ford LTD AM/FM Stereo that I purchased with the bracket that I will include with the sale.
Two of the tires are in legal and fair condition and two are bad. One of the tires let go due to being old and another one has dry rot from age. Two like new tires are included in the sale of the car in the trunk and they are the proper size for the car and match the other tires. Included with the sale is also an old vintage light bar (period correct) for the car with the single rotating light (needs a lens) and the two red end lights. The graphics on the car are gold leaf and they look great, this car gets attention wherever it goes and has been used for multiple photos.
I have used this car and driven it to cruise nights for photo opportunities and outreach with local fire departments. I had high hopes of fully restoring this car and bringing it back to new condition but I just don’t have the time. Currently I have 12 cars and have decided that I have to sell some due to not having the room and most of all the time to give them the attention that they deserve. The car is titled, registered and insured currently in my name and is in a climate controlled storage building at this time.
Please understand that this is not a 100 point show car. It’s a nice driver quality ex official vehicle that does have wear and tear consistent with a 43 year old municipality vehicle. If you are looking for a perfect car this is not for you, if you’re looking for a fun driver to take to cruise night and have every kid want to photo of them with the car and want to sit in it this is the car for you. Put the old gumball machine and lightbar on top and this car will be a hit wherever it goes. I am selling the car in as is condition with no warranty. I know that I have probably forgotten something so if you have any questions please feel free to contact me and I will be happy to answer to the best of my ability. With a little love this car will be awesome and is unique!
