This is Brad's Mustang 26 years old. ↑ Brad is intense and just like championship body building. when putting together what might be the fastest Mustang in Nevada. Brad does nothing halfway. In the spring of 2008. he acquired this 1-owner. very well cared for 1988 Mustang GT convertible. The previous owner purchased the Scarlet Red 5-speed new locally and just like Brad. saved every receipt. After tending to things like a new top. new carpet throughout. new interior switchgear and lots of other restoration items. Brad ordered a new Sportsman Series. Iron Eagle block from Dart Machinery. Skull Marine Performance in Boulder City assembled the bottom end using the finest parts available. A Comp Cams custom grind with . 608/. 612 lift produces an idle unlike anything you've ever heard. Upon completion. Brad took home a fully balanced and blueprinted 348 cubic inch short block assembly. There followed. a wallet busting list of go-fast parts. including Renegade aluminum heads. Trick Flow intake and the pièce de résistance; a Vortech V-7 supercharger huffing an incredible 22 lbs. (?) of boost. Stainless shorty headers. an H-pipe. Flowmasters and 3-inch pipes dump down and away. ahead of the rear axle. As you can see. (above) a recent dyno pull pegs this bad boy at 789 rear wheel horsepower. with an unbelievable 732 ft-lbs of torque. After vertically strapping the car down to the "known conservative" Mustang Dyno. the car still lossed traction at 5750RPM when we were shooting to see the pulls at 7000 RPM. That's net power to the ground folks. without coming anywhere near redline. Looking at the graph. another 1. 00 revs pushes this monster well north of 1. 00 rear wheel horsepower. Brutal output like this would murder a stock Mustang drive train. so the old tranny was tossed in favor of a brand new Tremec TKO 600 5-speed. A super light weight flywheel provides instant throttle response and the McLeod dual-disc clutch bites hard with perfectly linear engagement. Massive u-joints on each end of an aluminum driveshaft (a work of art to behold) faithfully delivers power to an enormously over-built and reinforced Ford 8. 8 rear end. Moser axles. an Eaton posi and Precision Gear 3. 55 ring and pinion are all bullet proof. As you might guess. Brad likes to do things right and 1. 00+ horsepower could probably twist an unprotected Fox unibody into a pretzel. Sub-frame connectors and braces are everywhere but this Mustang isn't just a straight line. one-trick pony. Brad wanted a class dominating road course car and even a quick look underneath explains why this rag top out corners a Corvette. The entire undercarriage was stripped bare with new and complete steering. suspension and brakes. Race ready upper/lower control arms. panhard bar. a 5-lug spindle kit. lowering springs. waay thick sway bars. Bilstein struts and shocks and a massive torque arm set-up stretching from transmission to pumpkin. The brake system is new from pedal to pad including stainless steel lines. slotted/drilled rotors up front and vented at the rear. Custom. one-off FR500 style wheels (17 x 9 front/17 x 10. 5 rear) are wrapped with Nitto NT 05 ultra high performance radials; 255/40ZR17 front and a steamroller 315/35ZR17 out back. What follows a quick turn of the key isn't just a sound. It is an seismic event. The Iron Eagle 348 thunders to life with a deep. intimidating roar. The cam has the car shimmering and I can feel the exhaust pulses through the seat. right into my bones. The shifter feels recalcitrant at first but easy for me to master. With a sigh. I blip the revs a bit to match and ease the clutch out. The car rumbles and once on the street. I know better than to light it up in first. Even so. speed feels alarmingly immediate until I remember this convertible is barely 3. 00 pounds. I turn onto a well known and empty stretch of road and carefully squeeze in about 75% throttle in second and third gear.
