Stored in a barn from 1977 to 2004, this sleek Swedish coupe has now taken on a life of being in the spotlight after a careful restoration. The restoration was completed approximately 10 years ago, and the resulting finish of the car is jaw dropping. Being such a stylish car from the early '70's makes this 1800E easy to appreciate.
P1800's are cars that seem to pop up in different car circles and at shows, but somehow the design details on them are easily missed. Styling is on par with Italian GT cars, but on a slightly smaller scale, and they look as if they may have been designed by Pininfarina or Bertone. The car we offer for sale has sleek fastback styling, small 'fins' on the rear fenders, very simple tail lights and bumpers, and a pronounced oval grill. The resemblance to a late '50's Ferrari 250 Ellena is uncanny. A few famous people admired the beauty of the 1800 series cars - Roger Daltrey of The Who had a P1800, and Roger Moore famously played modern day Robin Hood and investigator Simon Templar in the TV series The Saint. The car seen in the show was actually his personal car.
This car is finished in the original California White (code 42) over a red trimmed interior (code 339-764). The restoration was taken on by Howard Orloff Volvo of Chicago Illinois. The service manager at Orloff described the restoration as a tough but rewarding project for all that were involved. The finished product looks like a new car right off the factory floor, and is most definitely a car that deserves a place in a special collection. Fit and finish of body panels are spot on, and all trim and brightwork is in awesome condition.
The push button door release is cleverly integrated into the upper exterior trim that sweeps across the top of the rear fenders and ends in the upper corners of the doors. Push the release button and the door pops open revealing the red trimmed, GT car inspired interior. Multiple Smith's gauges take center stage on the simple, thin dashboard. The dashboard also features dark woodgrain trim, and pull switches shod with small white icons to identify each one. A large round shift knob for the 4-speed manual transmission sits in close proximity to the large 3 spoke steering wheel, which is the setup a driver's car should have. All the trim and upholstery is in beautiful condition, right down to the embossed Volvo logos on the door cards. The location and shape of many of the switches inside the car are not what one might say are conventional locations for the time, but regardless of the form, they function just fine.
Speaking of unconventional, pushing a large chrome lever under the driver's side of the dashboard down and away from you releases the forward canting hood. A B20 engine sits in a tidy engine bay - it's obvious even at a glance that a great deal of time was taken during the restoration to return everything to the way it would've been when the car rolled off the assembly line. The underside of the car has a very nice finish from the front apron, to the twin curved tail pipes at the rear.
You don't need to be a rock musician, an aspiring James Bond, or have a first name of Olaf to enjoy this sleek Volvo. An appreciation for the beautiful design, the capable engine, and comfortable interior of this Collector grade Volvo is what it takes.
