1962 Volvo PV544 Sport• Beautifully restored, seldom-seen Sport example• Same Florida owner for the past decade• US market export Volvo• One of only 13,157 Volvos sold in the US during 1962• Factory Sport model B18D 90HP dual SU carb 1.8L engine (code 2)• M40 Four-speed manual transmission (code 44)• Black exterior with red over white vinyl interior• Factory 12 volt electrical system• Coker Classic whitewalls, size 165R15The Volvo PV is a series of two-door, four-passenger car models — the PV444 and the PV544 — made by Volvo from 1947 to 1966. The PV quickly earned a reputation for being strong and rugged and we have a beautifully restored, seldom-seen PV544 Sport with the B18D 90HP dual carb 1.8L engine at MotoeXotica Classic Cars. The Sport model featured dual SU carburetors and was produced from 1962 until 544 sales ended in 1965.Nineteen sixty-two was a special year for the PV544 as it was the first year the car received 12-volt electrics and the much improved 1.8-liter B18 engine from the P1800S "Saint" sports car. In Sport trim, twin SU carburetors provided 90 horsepower, exactly the same as a contemporary Porsche 356 Super 90 was blessed with. Equipped with a super low, yet stock 4.56 rear end ratio, the Volvo would give the Porsche a run for the money at the stoplight!Dressed in black, the paint and trim are in overall excellent order, as are the windows and lights. The car's beautifully restored bodywork is straight and solid, its chrome bumpers fit tightly to the body, the trunk looks clean and has a full-sized spare tire complete with red wheel. The engine bay is extremely tidy and the battery looks great. This Volvo rolls on Coker Classic whitewalls, size 165R15 at every corner. Each tire is mounted to a factory wheel with chrome center caps. The wheels and tires are all in very good order.Under the front-hinged hood is a 90HP B18D 1.8L four-cylinder engine (code 2) with twin SU carburetors and backed by a four-speed manual transmission (code M40).Inside, the restoration continues with a red over white vinyl upholstery that is in overall very good order. The black carpet looks great while the white headliner is in good shape and offers great contrast to the carpet. The two-spoke steering wheel looks great, framed by a black instrument panel with a ribbon speedometer but the speedometer and odometer are inoperable. The inner door panels' color and pattern match that of the seats and look fantastic. The floor-mounted shift lever is topped by a handsome chrome ball and the glove box has a mounted clock. In 1958, the PV 544 was introduced. The most important differences with the PV444 are: the windscreen is made of one piece, new (also padded) dashboard (with horizontal speedometer) and interior, new steering wheel, new tail lights, redesigned steering box, larger rear window and of course: room for five persons instead of four (hence the name 544). The extra space was created by a wider back seat. There were also seatbelt mounts available at the back (seatbelt mounts in the front were already available in the PV 444).The next significant change occurred in 1962, when the B16 was replaced by Volvo's new B18 engine, initially developed for the P1800 sports car, introduced the previous year. This 1.8L engine had five main bearings. Again, single and twin carburetor versions were offered, designated B18A and B18D, respectively. Other changes included front suspension modifications, a 12-volt electrical system, renewed interior and exterior trim, asymmetrical headlights, front indicators slightly moved to the outer sides, slightly modified grille (with B18-logo), modified instrument panel. The PV also competed successfully, in the American SCCA class but also internationally, with a second-hand PV544 memorably winning the Safari Rally in 1965.Competition to this Volvo in 1962 included Buick's Special, Chevrolet's Chevy II, Dodge's Dart, Ford's Falcon, Mercedes-Benz's 180, Mercury's Comet, Oldsmobile's F-85, Plymouth's Valiant, Pontiac's Tempest and Saab's 96.If you're a fan of vehicular rarities, if you're a Swedish car fan or you're looking for something unique for your collection, you should drop by MotoeXotica Classic Cars to check out this Volvo PV544 Sport in person!VIN: 35900762BThis car is currently located at our facility in St. Louis, Missouri.
