Onward!
The legend lives. This is a beautiful example of a 1989 Volvo 740 Turbo Intercooler. The original Turbo Brick! I am the second owner, having purchased the vehicle in 2016. It was originally bought new from the dealer by a local Honolulu business woman. The vehicle was rarely used, having amassed a total mileage of 98,251 from 1989 to 2016, when I bought it. (In the 27 years she owned it, it only averaged 3,639 miles per year) I bought it in 2016 and have slowly been refurbishing it.
The current mileage is 113,6xx. This is my weekend pleasure driver, as I have another vehicle that is used as my daily driver.
This car has really never been driven to its full potential. Some might call it a “creampuff”. The previous owner never drove it hard, and me being a 51 year old guy, drove it for the sheer pleasure of owning it. Never been drifted or raced or anything of the sort. The most action the turbo gets is when I merge onto the freeway… But I can honestly say, when I floor it… it moves like a bat out of hell!
It’s hard to describe the pure joy that I’ve had owning my dream car. I don’t even have to be driving it, just seeing it sitting my garage gives me great pleasure. (Weird, I know!) I cannot describe the sheer delight to take her out on the weekend to cruise around on a bright Hawaiian sunny day, and just enjoy the experience of owning and driving this magnificent piece of automobilia. I must admit, often times I will go out of my way just to get on a freeway on-ramp, so I can feel the exhilaration of this rocket. The turbocharger which is married to the B231FT "RED BLOCK" engine and augmented by the OEM Turbo Plus kit, pulls so hard, and the AW71 transmission shifts so smoothly, that my passengers sometimes say “WHOA! I wasn’t expecting that from a Volvo!” I’m sure other cars on the freeway aren’t expecting a 29 year old Volvo to be rocketing past them, starting from a standstill, at the freeway merge entrance!
I have always been a fan of the 740 since I first saw it in the 80’s, back in high school. I vowed that one day I would own one. Well, it took 31 years, but I finally saw one for sale that met my criteria to be refurbished.
1) Well maintained, with documented service records.
2) Very good condition.
3) It had to be black. (Yes, I could have got another color and painted it, but who wants to spend 5-6K on a quality re-painting? Not me.)
I finally saw my opportunity in 2016. I bought it and found out from the previous owner that it was maintained at a local Volvo specialty shop. She did not keep the paperwork copies of the maintenance records, but said that electronic copies were on file at the shop. I paid a visit to the shop and spoke to the owner, who is a master Volvo technician. We talked extensively about the car’s history, and he showed me the electronic copies of all the maintenance he did on this car. He said the previous owner really took care of this vehicle, bringing it in anytime something need repair. I was more than satisfied as to the mechanical condition of this vehicle.
At that point, I had decided that I would make the effort to fully refurbish the car, and bring it to as close to as new condition, as I could.
Little did I know of the time, effort and MONEY that I would end up spending on this quest. This became an addiction, and two years later, I have spent almost 25K getting it to where it is now. (with all receipts for work done)
I have always used Volvo OEM parts, except in instances where there was a clear upgrade that was better than OEM. (Like silicone hoses, instead of rubber, etc.) Some parts were purchased from IPD, eEuroparts, Pelican and Do 88 (Sweden). When filling with gas, only Premium Top Tier fuel has been used. (If interested search: Aloha gas top tier)

I’ve “X” out the names of some of the shops that did work because I don’t want potential buyers to be calling and bothering them, asking about the car. Of course, all information and documentation will be available to the buyer.
As far as the condition of the exterior, the black paint is shiny and looks really good. The professional who detailed it said that it was re-painted at one point, but I can’t tell, so I’ll just take his word for it. There are touch-ups, small dings and other minor blemishes. This is not a concuors show vehicle. But I can say it does look remarkably well and the small imperfections are not really noticeable.
It has a sunroof, and it worked perfectly, but it tended to drip whenever it rained. Since it was something I never used, I had my mechanic disable the connection to the sunroof motor (So if I accidentally pressed the switch it wouldn’t open) and I also caulked the sunroof with black sealant. However, I intentionally made this so that if I ever decided to use the sunroof again, I could re-attach the motor and use a plastic putty knife to scrape out the sealant. (So it can be made operational again if desired)
All the gauges on the instrument cluster work freely and do not stick. The odometer works as well, and accurately keeps track of the miles driven.
I just had the AC's port valve replaced, so the AC is blowing nice and cold again!
It has been garage kept its entire life, with a top-of-the-line custom fit Covercraft car cover, to keep the dust off.
I also have the four original Draco "Cookie cutter" rims with almost new Falken “TOURING” tires. I have included one picture which shows the tires/rims (before I bought the Pegasus’s) These are included if you want them, however, you will need to check with the shipper if they can be put inside the car and shipped.
So why am I selling? Believe me, I REALLY don’t want to. I’ve been refurbishing it with the intention that I would have this car forever.
But life has a funny way throwing some curveballs at you. While it is a personal matter, I will say that I have been diagnosed with a certain medical condition which will only get worse. I would like to see this car go to another collector who will cherish it as much as I have. That way my family won’t have to deal with it later.
