We are ready to say a bittersweet goodbye to our 1986 Westy. We have lived comfortably in this van for many months at a time, and had many awesome road trips in this little home away from home. One of the things we learned in our time in Vanagons, is with the high clearance and tight turning radius we could often crawl out into trickier terrain than a lot of 4 wheel drivers. Park in your scenic destination of choice, climb through the back, pop open the top, pour some wine and cook a meal right there. We have not found any camping situation we've loved more.
The van runs great and was our daily driver for years. Our life has changed quite a bit and we have not been using it much for a few years, apart from maintenance drives close to home. It has a rebuilt 4cyl engine with approximately 175k miles on it. The interior is clean and has been well cared for and it has a beautiful, warm, sandy gold color scheme in and out. Easy and fun to drive, sitting high with a big open view.
2.1 L motor, power steering, smooth shifting automatic transmission.
We just had new brake drums, shoes, cylinders, springs, and a new master cylinder put in. Very nice Vöxx wheels and Hankook Optimo H724 (P215 175R15) tires, and fairly recently replaced alternator and CV joints. We had a new gas tank and fuel lines installed a few years back when we were in the van for long periods at a time. We wanted to eliminate any gas odors in our living space.
It does have air conditioning, but we had the belt removed to save on gas. It did used to work well. It’s been years since testing and might need a charge. The interior electrical outlets work, which are used when an extension cord is plugged into the outside AC outlet. Great for powering up when you visit friends or family and want to have your own little space.
All three outside port covers on the side of the van have been replaced, and the exterior electrical outlet has as well. The body has some rust and the tent could be replaced as it has some tears and staining in front, but it does work as is. This is the original tent, so pretty typical for it's age.The refrigerator is clean and works great, as does the stove and sink. There is no hinge lock “Galley Cover Brace†to hold the stove/sink cover open so we always used a bamboo stick (included :). This part is available online now though.
Comes with a type 41 auxiliary battery to power lights and appliances while camped. The propane regulator has been replaced.
The slider door latch is a little finicky. It latches most of time but needs a slight adjustment. There is no mattress in the upper bunk. Camping mats work great though, and if one wanted to complete the bunk, it is essentially a large piece of foam with a fabric casing.
Closets, drawers and storage cubbies are clean, and for a small space there is quite a lot of storage. The Kenwood Stereo works, if maybe a bit flaky once in a while. It could be as simple as the contacts for the front panel needing to be cleaned. The stereo has a remote, which is a small but surprisingly nice feature. Model KDC-MPV7019 - There is a PDF manual available online.
We will include two extra belts, some bulbs and odds and ends. The Pelican Case in the cargo area on top is included. The van runs and drives great, all of the essentials work and it is ready to hit the road. Remember this is from 1986, and has it's quirks as mentioned. It is sold as is and as shown. Original owner’s manual is included in the sale.
Please ask any questions you have. We are happy to answer any questions or provide any additional photos.
