Car description

1977 Volkswagen Westfalia camper

I’m regrettably listing my 1977 VW camper for sale. I purchased it about three years ago with the intention of doing some camping but I haven’t been able to so it’s time to pass it on to someone who will. It is a Westaflia Campmobile Berlin Deluxe model which I have been told was the top of the range. According to the M-Code plate, it was built on November 2nd, 1976.

When I bought the bus it was in pretty nice condition apart from faded paint so I drove it around here and there for a few months like it was. In 2017, I decided to freshen it up. I took it to a local body shop for a complete repaint. It was repainted in Sherwin Williams Bright Yellow Green, which is close to the original color but a little bit brighter. The pictures don’t show how bright the color is in person. It’s a very striking color and the bus gets looks from people every time I drive it. The top, bumpers and wheels were painted bright white. The paint job isn’t 100% perfect but I wasn’t building a show car. There are few dings that they didn’t repair and a small rust bubble near the right rear jack point. It’s very respectable for a “driver” type of car. The paint has small cracks in the fiber glass top. Overall, I would give it an 8 out of 10. I’ve taken it to a couple shows and it holds it’s own with nearly every other car.

When it was repainted, we took out all of the glass, lights, bumpers, etc and all of the seals for the doors and windows were replaced when it was re-assembled. I also replaced all of the lenses for the taillights, turn signals and side markers, rubber step pads inside the doors, the side view mirrors, windshield wiper arms and wiper blades. The windshield was also replaced as it was original and fairly pitted. The canvas for the camper top was in great shape so it was left alone but I did replace all of the seals for the top. The previous owners had the inside of the fiberglass roof upholstered in tan tweed and it looks really nice so I left it alone as well.

Since I planned on using it to camp in, I wanted the interior to be extra nice. I had the front seats reupholstered with stock green yellow plaid cloth and re padded. I also replaced the front door cards (correct green) and the sliding door card correct wood grain. The carpet had seen better days as well so I had the upholstery shop fit new carpet in a darker green. The upholstery on the rear seat/bed and upper bed is in pretty nice shape and was left alone. The front and rear tables are both there as well as the buddy seat and the front cot. All of the camper “furniture” is intact and in pretty good shape. There are a few spots where the wood laminate has peeled up but nothing too terrible. The elastic on the front curtain has lost its tension. I planned to redo it someday but haven’t gotten to it yet. The sink and refrigerator both work (the fridge cooled down to 35 degrees!). When I filled the water tank up and turned on the sink to take pictures the other day, I noticed that the sink drain pipe is leaking a little. I’ll try to get that sorted out soon. I never tried the stove but I assume it will work if you fill the propane tank.

The previous owner installed a really nice stereo with separate mids and tweeters with crossovers and a speaker box with two 10” subs and a giant amplifier under the rear seat. The speaker box is upholstered in th same tweed as the inside of the camper top. They also installed a VDO tachometer in the “blank” hole next to the fuel gauge and auxiliary fan for the defroster, actuated by a toggle switch on the steering column.

Mechanically, I haven’t had to do much to the bus as it’s always ran great for me. The previous owners told me that the engine had about 20k on a rebuild but they misplaced the receipt. I recently gave it a tune up and oil change and replaced the engine compartment seal and the muffler. I’ve also replaced the rear brakes, steering drag link and a couple of the CV boots. The battery is about two years old and the tires are about six months old.

Overall, this is a really nice bus. It runs drives and looks great. Everything in it works as it should. It’s fun to drive and gets tons attention. In a perfect world, I would keep it until I can use it. I try to be honest and accurate when I sell things because I want the new owners to be happy with their purchase and to bid with confidence. I’m happy to sell to overseas buyers. I have a clear Colorado title. The odometer reds 61,000 but I assume it’s 161,000. I don’t offer shipping but I will coordinate pick up with the shipper of your choice. More pictures are available upon request. Feel free to ask any questions. Thanks!
