The Good
Runs good, everything works. Operates at 120 volt (135 volts when fully charged) and gets from 10 to 20 miles on a charge, depending on how you drive. It is capable of 70mph, but uses the charge pretty quickly at that speed. I just replaced the 12 volt accessory battery with a rebuilt one. Pink in hand, I placed a "Non-Op" on it.
The Bad
The propane RV heater I installed doesn't work any more, needs an ignitor or circuit board. The sunroof leaks quite a bit, currently duct tape is around it to minimize water entrance. Brakes frequently need adjusting (which is typical for these older VW's). Speedometer inoperative, mileage unknown. Only has an AM radio, but the interference from the electric drive system makes it pretty much useless when driving.
I did the EV conversion back in 2008 when there were no factory EV's available. It features a Netgain "Warp 9" series wound DC motor and a 1000 amp Kelly Controller. It charges with a 230 volt plug, (like you would use for your dryer) through a Zivan charger configured for the 10 deep cycle AGM type batteries that feed the power train. It has a VW adapter and uses the stock VW clutch and transmission. I usually just keep it in third gear. I installed an RV heater which routes hot air through the stock VW heating ducts to warm the car and defrost the windows. However, as previously stated, it no longer works. I started to put in an air conditioning system, but did not finish doing so because I realized the power loss would greatly reduce my driving range. (The compressor, evaporator and condensor are all mounted). I drove this car off and on since 08 with very few problems. Traction batteries were replaced in 2010, but still hold a pretty good charge since I hardly drive it any more. I keep a small solar panel in the back window to keep the 12 volt accessory battery charged. I'm tired of messing with it, I have way too many other vehicles and projects. I can deliver within 50 miles of my home in Tehachapi, CA for $1.00 a mile extra. This includes Bakersfield and Lancaster. Obviously, if you don't live rather close to me, trailering will be necessary. Buyer must make shipping arangements for any greater distances than previously mentioned.
