Selling a very cool and very rare 1976 Volkswagen Type 181 Kubelwagen that was made for the German military. These vehicles are commonly known as "VW Things" in the USA, but those were 1973 and 1974 only and were made in Mexico. This vehicle is known as a "Kubelwagen" in Germany and was made from 1968 to 1979, mostly for the German military.
This one was imported in a 36 car lot during the late 1990's and has sat dormant since then. There are only a few remaining, with this being one of the nicest examples. I am hoping to find it a new caring and loving home for it's next life. Pans are solid, although dented from use, and there looks like two rust repairs on the body previously: one under the rear decklid and one on the bottom of the passenger heater channel. Both repairs were done in Germany and painted with similar olive green paint before the car was retired . One other small rust area in front of the driver's door. Hood and front windshield came from a different car as they are not painted camouflage. Missing wiper motor, wiper arms and cross bar, and sunvisors. Windshield is cracked. There is some front end body damage to the front apron and bumper that needs to be repaired. Missing one front blackout light in the area of the damage, but includes both bumper brush guards.
Interior is complete with front and rear seats. Driver's side front seat bottom is torn and there is a slight tear in the rear seat cushion, with German gaffer tape over it. Passenger seat has a strange recliner mechanism I haven't seen before. Gas tank and Eberspacher gas heater are present, and the vehicle includes a 14" spare tire and rim with mount and wing-nut. Vehicle has three (3) 14" rims and one (1) 15" rim on it currently, all with original style tires and tubes. It has three (3) of the original painted hubcaps on the 14" rims. Includes one of the plastic elbow covers for the top frame when it's folded down, includes two (2) tire chains in original burlap sacks, includes all four (4) windows with good posts, includes one original rubber floor mat with holes for the front passenger floor, and includes a set of military blackout covers. Blackout cover set includes the canvas storage bag, two (2) vinyl headlight covers, two (2) vinyl side mirror covers, and one (1) vinyl windshield cover. . There is one complete rifle mount and a couple other mounts on the floor, not sure what they are for. Also there are two mounts with rubber straps on the rear parcel tray area.
The top is still sporting its original camouflage paint job. It has a few tears but it is in overall very presentable condition. In some pictures it is being secured with straps as it is missing the latches to hold it down. It has the original rear window with two small tears. I think it's a really cool part of the car.
Engine is original and turns over by hand. Has an extra crankshaft pulley, but is missing the front tin. Includes original air cleaner, exhaust system, and engine skid guard. Vehicle is a project and is currently not running as it is missing the distributor and battery, among other issues. Vehicle chassis is "complete" to be defined as front suspension, rear suspension, wheels, and does roll. Emergency brake does work. Vehicle has 62,087 kilometers.
Since this was a graymarket car, there is NO TITLE so please be aware of that, I can provide a Bill of Sale.
Vehicle is from a private collection and is being sold as-ism, where is, but I can help with delivery.
