I thought I would have this truck forever but times and circumstances change, so up for sale is my gorgeous 1976 frame-off restored FJ40 Land Cruiser with Chevy 350 crate-conversion with double-barrel carburetor conversion, 2.5" great-sounding exhaust, rust-free aluminum tub and yellow paint job. Great color combination, power steering and automatic transmission. This vehicle is located just outside Detroit, Michigan. Private owner sale.
HISTORY: The 1976 Toyota FJ40 Land Cruiser has become an iconic vintage 4X4 vehicle that has always held a devoted following of off road enthusiasts. Being fashioned after the Willy's M38 Jeep that began military service in WWII, the FJ40 was developed for the world market to go head to head with Land Rover... Toyota's FJ40 proved to be more rugged and reliable in demanding situations. Launched in 1960 as the Land Cruiser Model 40, its worldwide success carried for many decades, but for enthusiasts in the United States, the end came about in 1984. Only mild changes to the Toyota FJ were integrated over the years, mostly consisting of better safety and convenience items. These trucks are legendary in off-roading groups for being reliable and extremely agile due to their short wheel base.
GENERAL: Here is my 1976 FJ40 Land Cruiser. This was a full body-off restoration... built from the ground up, the frame was stripped all the way down to bare metal. This one is clean with an iconic yellow paint job, black vinyl interior, this restored example is in remarkable, almost completely rust-free condition. Under the hood lies a Chevy 350 small-block crate engine conversion . There are many options on this unit (both original and aftermarket) starting with power steering, AM/FM/CD stereo radio with Blaupunkt 160 watt amplifier and added speakers in back, secure/lockable dash/console/liftgate, rear mounted spare, locking front hubs, dual outside mirrors, front bumper hooks, locking gas door, rear folding jump seats, and tow receiver hitch.Odometer reads 40,780.
EXTERIOR: Front and rear bumpers with a built-in tow attachments and triple lighting in the front (headlights, PIAA bumper-mounted fog lights, windshield-mounted FET Landmaster 216 lights with clear lenses and plastic mesh covers). Bumpers and exterior hardware were stripped and recoated with a bumper coating. Tires are Goodyear Wrangler MT/R 33x12.5R15 mud-terrain. Also included is a soft-top (pictured but not currently on), soft doors and hard-top which needs to be reconditioned and assembled.
INTERIOR: You'll find the interior is far more civilized than you'd expect for a world traveler like this; boasting comfortable high-back bucket seats. The twin folding seats in back are great for kids or adults. The stereo in great with the Blaupunkt 160 watt amplifier and auxiliary speakers in the back. Also an Tuffy-brand secure, lockable console plus lockable dash storage and a hollow rear liftgate for lockable storage.
ENGINE & TRANNY: a Chevy 350 small-block crate engine conversion and what many consider the best 4-wheel drive system known to man. All gauges work as intended. The radiator was replaced with a new 2-row aluminum model made for the Toyota FJ capable of cooling a 650HP engine with 1" wide core tubes, no epoxies, 100% TIG Welded, 18 Fins per inch cross-flow designand an 15" electric fan was added to ensure more cooling power than necessary.
SUMMARY: After the cosmetic restoration on this FJ40 was completed, it was used rather sparingly ever since. Stainless steel body hardware was used along with polished stainless hood & windshield attachments. The vehicle will come with the K&N air filter, fresh engine oil & filter and fully greased suspension. Please feel free to call with more questions or make arrangements to see the truck in person. Thanks for looking!
This truck is not perfect... here's what you should know before buying:
The FJ starts the same way every time... when warm, it starts within about a second. When cold, it needs to crank about 4 seconds, followed by a second ignition crank of 3 seconds. Every time is the same in the same warm or cold state. No smoke... runs, drives and performs excellent in all areas.
Exterior bumpers coating... some of this is now coming off and may need attention.
The paint is bubbling under both the front turn signals... this has remained unchanged and has not gotten any worse in 8 years. The affected area is approximately 4 inches.
The carpet on the rear speaker box has rolled down from people climbing into the back seats. I'm sure it can be rolled back and glued down to look nicer.
There is a hole in the driver's seat - left-hand side.
The reverse lights do not work.
The light on the driver rear-side does not work (in the pictures)
