Original 1968 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 Fastback Signed by Carroll Shelby in 2003
As impressive as it was 50 years ago
Produced by Shelby and Ford from 1967-70, the GT500 quickly elbowed its way into the top tier of American muscle cars. What made a GT500 so special? When released, it was the ultimate performance Mustang. A customer could walk into any Ford dealer in 1967 and get a big-block V8 in a Mustang, but Ford only offered the relatively mild 390ci version, rated at 320 horsepower. To make the GT500, Shelby American installed a 428 Police Interceptor V8, fed by a pair of 600 cfm Holley carburetors on an aluminum medium-riser intake manifold, and rated at 355 horsepower. Later versions from 1968-70 used the 428 Cobra Jet V8, arguably Ford’s most successful engine of the original muscle car era.
And while the Mustang GT’s styling was on the subtle side, the GT500 was anything but. The GT500 had a unique nose, hood, trunk lid, spoiler and side scoops, all made from fiberglass. The high-beam headlamps were mounted in the center of the grille, at least initially. In the rear, Mercury Cougar sequential taillights replaced the stock Mustang units. These styling upgrades transformed the GT500 into the kind of car that could never pass unnoticed. Shelby marketed them as “TheRoad Cars.”
Very low 39,830 original miles.
Wimbledon White with Black interior.

This is not a replica. I bought this stunning original 1968 vehicle about two years ago from a local collector here in Paradise Valley, Arizona. He had originally purchased it at the Barrett Jackson Auction in 2003. Carroll Shelby signed the passenger side sun visor at that auction. It had a full “no expense spared” rotisserie restoration (with 38,000 miles on the odometer) just prior to that auction. The quality of the restoration is second to none, using all Ford/Shelby parts. Without a doubt in the top 5% of Shelby GT500’s concerning quality and options. Driven weekly around my neighborhood just a few hundred yards each time. Overall I have barely driven her and I have meticulously maintained her for the past two years. Always garaged. Everything works exactly as it should. Runs perfectly. The paint and interior are virtually perfect. New Goodyear tires were put on when I acquired it. Originally Sunlit Gold paint, it was refinished in official Shelby Wimbledon White during the rotisserie restoration. Comes with a framed Elite Marti report. In the official 1987 Shelby American World Registry. Less than 1900 miles driven since it was restored in 2003. During restoration the front exhaust pipes were replaced. Comes with these original/extra exhaust pipes. See photos. Rare automatic transmission. Has AC, blows cold.
One of only 615 Shelby GT500 Fastbacks produced with an Automatic Transmission in 1968.
