Sportscar Bargain: 1988 Porsche 944S Please wait a few moments while our high-resolution photos load.

Designed and engineered with passion in Germany, classic Porsches are world-famous sportscars surrounded by mystique. Just like Ferrari, Porsche is a manufacturer steeped in its history of racing successes; owning one of these fantastic cars is a very rewarding experience.

The Porsche 944 S -- S is for "Super" -- offered here is one of 5,391 such U.S. spec cars made during the 1988 model year.

Now 30 years old, the 944 has travelled just 77,856 miles - less than 2,600 miles annually, on average.

VIN *WP0AA2942JN465144* comes with a clean history report. We were fortunate to acquire the car from its long-term, enthusiast owner, who had purchased it back in 1998.
Let's take a closer look now.

Under the hood, inside the toothbrush-clean engine bay, lives the 187hp version of the tried-and-true 2.5-liter engine, aided by a 16-valve head and dual overhead camshafts derived from the 928 S4.

For the 1988 model, Porsche also introduced the new Bosch Digital Monotronic 2 Computer/DME with dual knock sensors, making a rather high (10.9:1) compression ratio possible. The car also came standard with ABS.

Our 944S features straight coachwork with excellent gaps all around. It has not been involved in any accidents, nor is there any corrosion to note.

The Guards Red finish has retained its luster and presents smooth and glossy. Black trim and weatherstripping is in very good to excellent condition throughout.
Note 944's unique steel sunroof and the idiosyncratic phone dial alloys, a fabulous period option.

Inside, Porsche's dashboard layout closely resembles that of its sibling, the 911, where "form follows function." Like most California Porsches of this vintage, there's some small hairline splits atop the dash.
Check out the leather-wrapped, factory steering wheel. Dual airbags were standard equipment on all '88 944S cars.

Cockpit features four large, circular, white-on-black VDO instruments, containing no less than six separate gauges, all of which work perfectly.

Driver and passenger enjoy black, leather-clad power seats. Notably, our 944 features the rare and desirable Porsche sport seats, which were an expensive extra-cost option at the time!

Very nice leather shows just minor creasing from age and use. It's still supple and will last a lifetime, if cared for properly.

Miraculously--given the 944's sleek and aerodynamic body contours--there is ample room in the back. Unlike the Porsche Boxster, or any "competitor" hailing from Asia, this Porsche accommodates four occupants for a true Grand Touring experience.

The 944 features a very versatile hatchback design. With the rear seat backs folded forward, even large and odd-shaped items can be transported in a hurry.

Huge trunk is nicely carpeted.

Underneath the trunk mat, there's nothing but straight and rust free metal.

Unused spare and tire jack.

Porsche's bottom looks as nicely preserved as the top. There's no damage, nor rust, no annoying fluid leaks.

Thursday, August 23rd was another fine day here in our SoCal paradise and we were itching for a test drive combined with a quick photo session.

Those who claim that front engined Porsches lack the pizzaz of their rear-engine counterparts have never driven a well-maintained 944S.

Due to the transaxle setup, weight balance is near perfect, and thus handling is neutral to a point you might not be able to explore on public roads. The 944S is also plenty fast, with 0 - 60 coming in @ 6.4 seconds and a quoted top speed of 144mph.

Returning home, we are in lust with the 944S. You absolutely can't beat the fun-per-mile for the money. Get it while the gettin' is still good, as prices for the last few remaining nice, low-mileage examples are already on the rise!

Opportunity knocks, are you ready to answer?
