NO RESERVE AUCTION - BID TO BUY
Very RARE EARLY CA Built confirmed by Beck - Built to be driven and enjoyed with 30k miles so you know the bugs have been worked out! Super attention to detail and highly optioned Spyder.
It's been 60 years since 24-year old James Dean met his demise on a lonely stretch of Route 466 in Cholame, California. The violent crash forever linked the young Hollywood star with the car he was driving: a 1955 Porsche 550 Spyder.
Could this be James Deans’ 550 Spyder?!?! Well.. no J and much to your benefit! After all there is a $1M reward just to FIND his destroyed car, it’s well accepted to be cursed to all whom come in contact with it, and ‘average’ original examples of this ‘little bastard’ get well into the multi millions. Ask Jerry Seinfeld, who recently sold his for $5,350,000. That’s USD folks, yikes. The most valuable car in his collection. So what do we have for sale here then you ask? This is an early production BECK Built Spyder. This is not a ‘kit’ car by any definition, but an actual professionally manufactured homage to the Porsche 550 of 1955. This car accurately represents and is genuinely titled a 1955 Porsche 550 Spyder. The only recreation of these cars that would be any closer to original than an early Beck, might be a hand built aluminum car, and those are well into the six figures themselves! That said the driving experience would be entirely the same and this example can be owned for TEN’s of thousands less. There is significance to finding an ‘early Beck’ which this one is, and newer ones are a tremendous waiting list and commend north of $50k when done. See their website for details and a back story on the company and consideration to accuracy they dedicate their work to. There is literally no other car like it for the money out there. I have driven this car to shows, through the back roads, on the highway, you name it. This car garnishes more attention than a brand new Ferrari, or ANY fully restored HEMI car out there, and will never be directed to the "part of the show were the 550’s are parked" because you will be the only one there. Furthermore, this is not your granddads ’55 car. This car is a tasteful professionally hand built recreation, with a modern tubular chassis and an extremely reliable appropriate mid mounted air-cooled flat 4 drive train. I have driven this car comfortably alongside modern Porsche 911’s at speeds of 80 mph with no exhaustion and plenty of room to push harder should you want to. The car weighs something like 1400 pounds after all. Dual webber carbs, 2 into 1 magnaflow exhaust makes an incredible symphony of grunts as you shift through the 4 gears through the tree lined backroads, or down the boulevard breaking necks as the pedestrians turn to try and identify what they just saw. So if you’re looking for a truly one of a kind, non-depreciating, fast, rare, but also reliable collectible car, and you don’t have 3+ million bucks burning a hole in your pocket, this is certainly it. As mentioned, title clear in hand, car runs excellent, all electronics work as they should, no issue get in a go win the show classic car. Comes with correct tonneau snap cover (So cool when driving solo!!), racing windscreen as on Jams Dean’s car, and removable racing-style fairing headrest (removed in some pictures). All decals are removable. Paint is in excellent like new condition all around. Rims are perfect as are tires and hub caps. Car is near mint.
I’m selling the car because I am unfortunately losing the space I had and it’s this or my 911 in the garage. I don’t have the heart (or the funds to be frank!) to keep both with one off site. Wife, and kids dictate the 4 seater stays of the two. NOT an easy choice. Of course, inspections are welcome however test rides are for those with funds verified. Car is being sold as-is, and is listed locally and on forums etc. I reserve the right to end the auction early in light of any deal made offline. That said please feel free to reach out to make an offer directly. This listing is a NO RESERVE auction and the car WILL go to the highest offer inside for 7 days. PLEASE do not bid if you do not have the means to pay for and collect the car. On that note collection is the buyer’s responsibility. I will help with shipping arrangements best I can of course and be as flexible as possible as I have some experience there. Please feel free to see my reviews as well as classic cars, air-cooled especially, is a passion of mine and so I’ve bought my fair share of them out of state in the past. Full payment needs to be initiated no later than 3 days from auction close. Paypal for deposit only unless you cover cost. Wire typically the easiest/fastest otherwise check must clear before car leaves. Cash is always king. As mentioned, I am losing storage space and therefor I can only hold the car for up to 3 weeks following the end of auction. Any later than that will incur a storage fee of $100 a week. At the end of the day I am a super straight forward reasonable guy so just keep me in the loop and I’m sure we’ll make this easy as can be. Please ask any questions you might have, and prior to bidding is encouraged J Best of luck, don’t miss out on a car that I can guarantee you’ll be glad you experienced. Thanks for reading, Brando
