Thanks for checking out my car. This is the first time this car has ever been listed for sale. I am not sure I will sell the car. I am just testing waters right now to gauge interest. I am prepared to sell the car to right buyer with the right offer.
Cars History First: The car was ordered on the east coast for a Surgeon that exported it to Hawaii. He maintained it and kept it until 1984. An Air Force service man bought it and exported it from Hawaii to my hometown. He hated the orange color so he painted it with what appears to be black house paint. At some point the timing was misadjusted and it burned a cylinder. The car was taken to a local VW repair shop that was owned by the car owners brother. There it sat since 1996.
Then I Saved the Car:The VW shop that had the car quit doing repairs and the car sat. I bugged the owner for three years to sell the car to me. After enlisting the help of a mutual friend we were able to come to an agreement on the car (no engine). I was able to buy the car and moved it to a heated garage. I was surprised that 3 of the four tires held air and the car rolled freely.
Then I Saved the Engine:The VW shop owner sold the car to me without the engine. I found out he still had the original engine and it had been disassembled. He wanted to keep the engine to put into a racing baja buggy. I found a rebuilt buggy with rebuilt 1800cc engine and we traded the buggy and some cash for the original engine.
The Car Today:The car is safely stored with its original disassembled engine waiting attention. I have acquired an new date spec windshield and replica nose badge both awaiting installation. Nothing else has been done to the car. It is still a "barn find".
Current Condition Car Body Rust issues:The body of the car is complete with very little rust. I will list the areas that I have found rust. Small quater size hole on pass floor board. Small rust hole in smugglers box. Rust on protective shield under cars nose. The chrome is there but the horn grills show a lot of pox marks. The interior is complete with a small tear on pass door panel. There is no carpet in car.
Current Condition Car engine:The engine will need to be rebuilt. I have the block (The block is still intact ) the valves the valve covers and the oil cooler. The 5 speed trans seems healthy. Engine turns freely.
The Future of the Car:I am considering keeping the car. I must confess I am more of a Cadillac man. I am in the process of restoring a 66 Fleetwood Brougham and a 66 eldorado. This car will ripen until I decided what to do. It will be at least until next summer until I can get to it. I am considering rebuilding the engine with larger cylinders to create a 912 2.0 liter engine. I was also thinking of sticking a vw 1600 engine in it and driving the car while rebuilding the original engine. Finally I am thinking about selling it to a Porsche enthusiast.
