Car description

1966 Plymouth Belvedere Convertible

Though the Belvedere name is a fanciful one, time was when automakers showed little imagination in naming their wares. In the beginning were models, with a capital M and some letter or number that often made sense only to the manufacturer. Later, Standard, DeLuxe, and Custom (sometimes Master, occasionally Salon) were used to indicate series in ascending order of price and posh, followed by redundancies like Special DeLuxe or, even worse, Super DeLuxe. Some played the numbers game. This usually involved cylinders (Six, Eight, Twelve, Sixteen, but seldom "Four"), engine and horsepower (Auburn's 8-98 of 1931, for instance), and wheelbase in inches (Packard's One-Twenty). There were also obscurities like production starting date (Cord 810) or even the hoped-for miles on a tank of gas (Nash 600). So, though the cars may have embodied no end of creative genius, their names were hardly inspired. Then came along Plymouth who took notice of the Chevrolet selling wildly withering the name of the ritzy section outside LA named Bel Air. Not to be out done, Plymouth ceased on the equally affluent neighborhood outside of San Francisco named Belvedere, and the rest as they say is history!

Ladies and Gentlemen, may I have your attention. There is a 1966 Plymouth Belvedere Convertible parked in the East Hall of the Classic Auto Mall, and it is up for consignment. Would you please go to this car, and take a close look at it, because it is a nice example of said car. Notice the good paint, snazzy interior, and it's a convertible with the correct 273ci V8. It will be awaiting your arrival, and it needs a new home. Thank you for your undivided attention! We now return you back to your regularly scheduled ooohing and ahhhhhing.

Exterior
Watch the golf cart please!! (It's merely a Classic Auto Mall employee pretending to be busy, so they hopped on a cart and go like hell through the hallways, seeming important!). Anyway, this mid 60s beauty is bathed in Soft Yellow, and this is adhered to hard straight steel with nicely spaced gaps. Several obvious hints of trim spears, chromed badging, handles and trimmings are added tastefully throughout. Fender skirts that do not blow up to the cars waist when driving over an air vent, adorn the rear quarters, and are good because some like it hot. Front and rear chrome trims/grille are very nice and have clean head and tail lighting. A black canvas convertible top with a big panoramic view plastic window for the rear, all shows tear free and clear on the plastic window. Standard offering wheel covers are wrapped by thin whites all around and rubber is like new on the treads. ATTENTION! It is now OK to slip inside and check out the interior...thank you.

Interior
Paging retro...paging retro, would retro please explain itself to this interior? Of course! Black simple door panels adorn the lower parts of the doors, and black shiny paint is reserved for the sills. Stepping across a wide threshold, there is a beautiful black vinyl split back bench awaiting your posterior. It can park itself on textured tuck and roll inserts with smooth pointer bolsters surrounding the outsides of the seats. This is also true if you want to sit in the back, this pattern is there too, so feel free. A nice original dash, certainly not perfect, but showing some slight wear, but original, fronts the seats, and has the original steering wheel fronting the dash. Black carpeting is flooding the floors, and the boot for the convertible top is in excellent condition.

Drivetrain
CAM reminds you to please have young children and the faint of heart step away from the engine bay immediately so as not to cause any over-excitement...Thank you! Those remaining to have a look will be seeing red. Red paint covering the 273ci block, valve covers, and intake manifold... Atop under the black air cleaner cover is a two-barrel carburetor and strapped to the rear of this mill is an A727 Torqueflite 3-speed automatic tranny. An 8-3/4 rear axle is way back. All this menagerie and parade of power within a nice Soft Yellow engine bay with supple hoses and shiny non corroded bolt ons essential to the running of said engine.

Undercarriage
Lookers are reminded that only serious buyers will be actually allowed under the car whilst it is up on the lift, otherwise EMPLOYEES ONLY under the car.... thank you...Might I say nearly showroom underneath, so we cannot listen to the announcement and gather round the photos. New exhaust, no road dirt, straight steel panels and floorpans and rockers. Torsion bar front suspension, and leaf springs for the rear, and drum brakes are on all 4 corners. Announcement...spectacular underneath.

Drive-Ability
Here Ye! Here Ye! Only those with a valid driver's license and expressed insured employees may test drive any vehicle, and I did. Here this car performed well on the test track, all functions were functioning, and it was a great day to have the top down. This car drives as nice as it looks, and is a head turner, particularly at the local Morgantown, Pennsylvania eating establishments which we tend to drive to when we have a cool car. Blame my decoder for that habit, I did not start it! Well...Oye Oye...

1966 Belvedere, named for the ritzy suburb of San Francisco, is all retro cool, a convertible, and has a smooth powerful mill under the hood. Ready for its next home, and to be enjoyed by its new owner, with lots of life and living to give up!! Watch the tram car please...Approaching the Minnie Parking Lot, please hold on until we are fully stopped then exit to your right.
