1966 Plymouth Satellite Convertible
In 1964 Plymouth's designers were being pushed by sales and marketing to make the cars look as wide as possible. So, it wasn't too much longer in 1965 that Plymouth unveiled a very large Plymouth Fury as Chrysler's full-size option. This meant the Belvedere branding would become the "mid-sized" option. In 1966 the styling for the Belvedere line was still wide, sleek, and clean. Plymouth's goal was accomplished and if you were in the market for a mid-sized vehicle in 1966 it didn't get much better than the Plymouth Belvedere Satellite.
Gracing our hallowed halls here at Classic Auto Mall in our West wing is a very special Plymouth Satellite Convertible right out of 1966. With its original 318ci V8 replaced with a powerful 1966 440ci V8 Commando this is loaded with options galore. Putting out 375hp (as the consigner states) the motor is absolutely correct. A well-attended to restoration, and garage kept all its life and showing it. Convertible top is still excellent as is the interior. Truly like a new 1966 Mopar.
Exterior
At the front of the body you will find quad headlights within the grille that is made up of horizontal slats. Below the grille a massive front bumper wraps around the front nose. At the start of the hood, just above the grille, PLYMOUTH emblems sit below a hood ornament that stands with the numbers 440 giving away what lies in wait under the hood. At the fenders you'll find the Satellite V Eight badging below chrome trim that runs the length of the body. The chrome door handles, chrome side mirrors, and the top and bottom chrome trim look fantastic and show no signs of wear. The rear of the car is just as sleek as the rest as there are no cutouts for the horizontal taillights, only the license plate. The Satellite emblem above the rear bumper also features a red white and blue emblem along with it. Finishing off the incredible look of this Satellite is the massive rear bumper and the dual exhausts that exit underneath it. All bathed in Turbine Bronze with a Bronze base coat, she's excellent, even the convertible top in black with a plastic clear rear window. 15-inch Magnum 500 wheels are all around.
Interior
Pop open the doors and you'll find a well presenting black vinyl interior. The interior is extremely spacious and features two front bucket seats that show no wear and have some Sheridan style embossing on either side of the inserts. In back is a bench with the same styling. In front of the driver's seat is the original dash that houses the 120 MPH speedometer. In the center is an aluminum ribbed paneled console which also serves as a glovebox, and shifter mounting. Above the seats is a black headliner for the convertible that is in fantastic shape. Throughout the interior, more chrome Satellite badging can be found with the red, white, and blue emblem along with it. Brand new carpet stretches across the floor and is covered by Satellite embroidered floor mats.
Drivetrain
This gleamer is also a screamer in 440ci Commando V8 form and looking showroom. A single 4-barrel carburetor is atop and an A727 Torqueflite 3-speed automatic transmission is on back. Our rear axle is 8-3/4 inches with a 3.23 conventional gear setup.
Undercarriage
A frame off restoration means everything gets looked at, and obviously there has been plenty of time spent underneath as well as above. No rust, just solid sturdy black framing, floorpans and rockers. A heavy coating of rustproofing covers all and protects just as well. Power disc brakes are now on front, and power drums for the rear. Upfront a torsion bar suspension is very clean and installed nice and tight, and on the back are leaf springs. Stock dual exhaust snakes its way rearward through all this clean black metal.
Drive-Ability
We took great care as this is really a nicely buttoned up restoration, so our test drive was mild, but hints of performance could be felt when we got more gutsy. The 440ci Commando is strong, braking is excellent, and cursing effortless. All interior functions were working as they should and smiles on both our test driving faces were ear to ear.
As consigner states, and I have to agree, probably one of THE nicer 1966 examples you will find countrywide. No stones were left unturned for the full restoration, and all is just showroom condition. A real find and look no further for a better example. Very original looking and the 440ci Commando does not kick it out of bed for eating crackers!
