Car description

1962 Plymouth Fury Convertible

Imagine a hot summer night, crickets chirping, cicadas rubbing their wings in search of some action, and the sounds of the Phillies coming over the radio. Intimate descriptions emanating from the melodious voice box of Frank Sims as he belted out every pitch by Cookie Rojas. Then there were the ever-present ads between innings which I can remember the tag lines to this day..."Mabel! Black Label" .."Scheafer is the one beer to have when you're having more than 1" ..and the "Take the wheel of your automobile and head on down to Ideal.... My father would have that radio glued to his ear under the stars on our back porch while we would sit there and discuss...well everything, those were the days.

For consignment a great memory from the early 1960's in the form of a 1962 Plymouth Fury Convertible. It has the makings of a great car, and indeed is actually one. Bathed in Satin Black, some dimpling on the chrome trimmings, push button transmission a-la the Jetsons, and a snazzy two tone interior. This car represents an early entry into the muscle car era, and the styling for 1962 is like none other to come before or after. A sweet spot of you will, right here at Classic Auto Mall, awaiting someone to snap it up, and head on down to "Ideal" (Grocery getter?!)

Exterior
The beneficiary of a complete rebuild, we note a no rust body with good gaps, and straight steel. This has been formed onto the distinctively Plymouth look with a concave curved grille, single round headlights on each corner and just to their inside on the curved grille a smaller round running light/high beam light. A long hood and flanked by straight front quarters with a wide trim spear flashing rearward to mid door like the tail of a comet (but it's a Fury!). This spear picks up on the rear quarter and runs to the back roll panel forming a horizontal fin which creates an overhang for the trio of round push button like taillights and backup lights with round chrome bezels. The door sills also have a highlighting trim which also runs to the nearly the back but present on the top of the quarters adding a bit of highlight to the sides of the trunk lid. Bumpers are looking fab, and on the back dual curved downward tailpipes push exhaust gases into the environment. 15-inch Magnum 500 wheels are on all 4 corners. Lest I forget the white canvas power convertible top with just a smidge of a tear, and a slightly fogged rear plastic window.

Interior
If we drop the top, we are greeted by a beautifully restored interior bathed in two tone red vinyl bolsters with tuck and roll inserts in white. This is all bordered by white piping and shows as dual front buckets with a center fold down armrest, and a long and luxurious spacious rear bench. Door panels use the white tuck and roll only in horizontal form with more red smooth surrounds and a red armrest. Pulls and cranks are excellent and just a hint of white piping has been worked into the design. For the power top a new pump, cylinders, and hoses are now installed, and all are working flawlessly. For the dash, which is its original design, but looking great in its newly chromed coverings, all original instruments, and the push button transmission. A smooth red dash front works its way over to the passenger area and sits next to this newly chromed panel which is in front of the driver. Below a metal aluminum strip houses the wiper and headlight knobs, ignition, ashtray and this is an original radio delete car. Deep rich red carpet is reserved for the floors, and inside the convertible is a black lining.

Drivetrain
Now showing under the hood within the nicely restored engine bay is a ca.1969 Roadrunner 440ci V8 engine, topped by a new Edelbrock 4-barrel carburetor, shiny valve covers, and air cleaner housing, yellow high voltage spark wires, a Mallory dual point distributor, and all this power produced goes back to a 727 Pushbutton automatic transmission. On the rear is an 8.75-inch 489 housing with 3.55 gears and is a posi-traction setup.

Undercarriage
A completely rebuilt front end underneath has torsion bar suspension, and drum brakes with power steering. On the rear is a leaf spring suspension and more drum brakes. A new fuel tank hangs in the middle of all black components with just slight surface rust. Floorpans and toe kicks are solid as are even the wheel wells, which are clean. It appears some welded repairs have been performed upfront just behind the wheel well areas, but all is buttoned up and structurally solid.

Drive-Ability
After a warmup, it was push the button and go! Great acceleration, smooth quiet idle, and a great cruiser, particularly with the top down. All functions were working and noted the heater and fan controls are also push button...Ultra-modern.

A nice example, work done, all working, and a convertible. Beautiful interior in two tone early 60's colors with that piping, and a clean corrosion free engine bay with a 1969 Roadrunner power mill. Satin Black with shiny chrome trimmings, side spears and horizontal fins...now there's something one does not see every day.
