One of only 503 produced with 4-speed transmission, this 1966 Plymouth Satellite 426 Hemi is the big bad wolf in a night gown from Little Red Riding Hood! Compared to other muscle cars of the era, this Satellite could be Grandma's car, but romp the pedal and the beast emerges through tires squealing and smoking.
A sticker on the door jamb proclaims: "Notice. This car is equipped with a 426 cu. in. engine (and other special equipment.) This car is intended for use in supervised acceleration trials and is not intended for highway or general passenger car use. Accordingly, this vehicle is sold "as is", and the 12 month or 12,000 mile vehicle warranty coverage and 5 year or 50,000 mile power train warranty coverage does not apply to this vehicle." Wouldn't that make a great muscle car t-shirt?
The Satellite was the up-market variant in Plymouth's mid-size lineup for 1965. Only available as a two-door hardtop or convertible, the Satellite was redesigned for 1966 with a sharper exterior profile. The vinyl bucket seats and inner door panels featured a 'Western Scroll' design that mimicked the look of tooled leather. Although it shows a few imperfections from age, this Satellite features its original interior, and the attention grabbing scroll work.
The "Street Hemi" engine was an optional engine for the first time in 1966. Cost was an extra $1,000 in a Satellite, raising the price close to $4,000 even without other options. Those few bills really paid off in power, however, as the engine produces at least the rated 425 hp and 490 ft-lb of torque. This could have been one of the first cars that needed another budget line for replacement tires!
Ordered with the 426 Hemi engine, this beautiful red Satellite boasts other performance-enhancing extras, including heavy-duty suspension and four-wheel, police-grade, 11-inch drum brakes. Car and Driver called the 1966 Hemi Satellite "the best combination of brute performance and tractable street manners we've ever driven...." To enhance the driving experience, this car is even equipped with air conditioning!
