Car description

The "Cricketmobile." This fully restored 1955 Pontiac Chieftain was bought for Buddy Holly and The Crickets when they were teenagers. The car's history has been touched by a wealth of famous rock and roll performers. It was purchased by the father of Crickets drummer J. I. (Jerry) Allison for the band in 1955 and became their touring car. Bought originally from Johnson & Connolly Motors in Lubbock, Texas, the list price was $1300. Elvis Presley had played for the dealership's grand opening on a Friday and Allison's Dad bought the car the following Monday. Mr. LeRoy Morford, who fully restored the car in an expensive project stated that he was told by J.I.'s Dad that there were three reasons a bigger car was needed: "They wanted something safe, they had a lot of equipment to haul and they had to have a lot of room for women." The Crickets kept the car from 1955 to 1961. Morford was given "the line" on the car, after it had passed through several owners, by Peggy Sue Gerron, immortalized by The Crickets' song named for her. Additional information regarding the history of the vehicle is available.
