Car description

1974 Mercedes-Benz 280c

This is our light baby blue Mercedes 2.8 I6 280c for sale. She is a very original survivor having been used lightly by various owners and serviced regularly. The car has 146,000miles of which the last 8,000 miles have been as a daily driver with my wife, since we bought the car in the summer of 2016. We bought and shipped the car from NC to California and had $4k plus work done by L&M Motors to get her in to a reliable daily driver state, with another few thousand spent as use discovered hidden problems that needed solving. While by their nature old cars have problems, the cobwebs have well and truly been blown off this one and she has nothing to hide as the advisories and recent work are an excellent health check of this classic. Either as a super solid start for a partial/cosmetic restoration or to continue as an original daily driver this is an excellent candidate.

We are only selling this beauty, as we will be unable to import and register it in South Africa when we move there from California.

History, This 280C spent most of its life in Arizona (hence the excellent condition) before a spell in North Carolina and then on to us in California.

Lots and lots of work done recently, just prior to our purchase in 2016:

Brakes, calipers, rotors, power brake booster, fuel tank, filters and fuel sender switch, neutral switch, water pump, thermostat, radiator hoses, plugs, leads and distributer cap. Alternator belt, power steering belt, valve cover gasket, lower door seals, trunk seal, hood pad, starter, sway bar links, ball joints, paint.

And since we bought in 2016: Front and rear shocks, subframe and torsion bar mounts, rims, lugs and new tires. Door stops, brand new carb, transmission shift rod and bushings, gear shift selector fix and bushings replaced. Various seat belt parts. Fuel pump, fuel hoses and clamps, steering column flex joint and shock. New Battery.

There are a few non critical issues that may not be obvious from the photos/advisories, which I would want to know if buying: While the inside is original and generally in very good condition, there are a few problem areas like the passenger side head rest wear, some trim cracking on the driver side door, etc. One electric rear window is slow but operational, one window is slightly maladjusted but again fully operational, drivers side door top seal cracked but not leaking. One headlight plastic cover is cracked and may or may not be replaced depending if I have time to find one. Certainly a few items that can either continue to be ignored (like the A/C) or would benefit from some TLC. Note, the ‘prettier’ old version steering wheel is currently fitted, we also have the original if you want it.

Please get in touch if you have further questions, I will be putting together a history of works pack to email to interested parties.
