Extremely rare 1963 Daimler SP250.
This is the type of vehicle car collectors look for to complete a collection as so few exist, et alone are located in the United States. Not many people have heard or seen a Daimler SP250 with total production numbers for this vehicle over a 5 year run at only 2,654 total produced with Hagerty Insurance believing that only 2500 may still exist. This car was designed as a sports car by British manufacturer Coventry and was the last car launched by Daimler before it was sold to Jaguar Cars in 1960.
It originated because Daimler company wanted a saloon car power by a V8 engine, n 1960 Jaguar offered their influence offering a more improved chassis with less flex.
Built by the factory as a fiberglass bodied car this example is and powered by a "baby" 2.5L Hemi and with the optional equipment listed below.
Optional equipment:
- Automatic Transmission
- Wire wheels
- Front and rear bumpers
- Adjustable steering column
- Windscreen washers
- Heater.
This example has a very original appearance with at least one repaint over its life. The trim and badging all appear to be original and has some pitting and patina from age. The convertible top and interior are in great shape. The engine runs out well and shifts easily. The engine appears original, lthough a powerglide transmission was installed at some point. It does come with a Daimler automatic 3 speed transmission also. The undercarriage of this SP250 is extremely nice and solid. This is really a quality car that can be enjoyed for years to come as it is... it isn't a fresh frame off restored car and isn't priced as such. If you have any questions or need specifics please ask away.
This is the first Daimler SP250 that we have had cross our path and truly feel that it is a collectors car. Not many exist that are in quality condition, nd those that do, re usually housed in top Car Collectors collections such as Jay Leno. Speaking of which, his car was purchased out of a 540 car collection on the CNBC Television show "The Car Chasers". This is the first time we are offering it up for sale. Again if you have any questions or would like additional photographs please do not hesitate to contact us we do check our emails throughout the day.
The Engine:
The engine bristled with modern technology, ncluding aluminum heads with fully machined hemispherical combustion chambers, ardened valve seats, nd 70 degrees between the valves. A very high-mounted central camshaft with aluminum pushrods opened said valves, nd double valve springs closed them reliably at engine speeds over 6000 rpm. A finned cast aluminum oil pan carried more than 7 quarts of oil. With 8.2:1 compression, he compact, ightweight engine made 140 hp and 155 lb-ft of what was often described as "turbine-smooth torque." -MotorTrend
About:
The British Daimler Motor Company of the 1950s (no relation to Daimler-Benz) was a dead brand walking, rimarily making limousines and hearses for the UK upper class and royalty. A fiberglass-bodied sports car with outrageous American-inspired styling seemed nearly impossible. But that's exactly what appeared on the Daimler stand in 1959 at the New York Auto Show.
The Daimler SP250 - originally referred to as the Daimler Dart before Dodge objected - possessed controversial styling. The car's gaping grille and whisk-like bumper overriders in particular have caused some to refer to the SP250 as an angry catfish. But performance was vivid (120 mph+) due to lightweight construction and a sparkling little 2.5-liter hemi V8. Disc brakes on all four wheels gave excellent stopping power.
On the minus side, arly cars - known as A-spec cars - lacked rigidity, nd doors were known to fly open when being flogged over rough pavement. This was later corrected in 1960 with the stiffened B-spec cars, ut heavy and vague steering plagued all of the model's guises. With production of just over 2,500, urviving cars are prized and surprisingly, everal specialists cater well to the car's needs. -Hagerty Insurance
