Car description

1959 OPEL REKORD OLYMPIA "CARAVAN"

NO RESERVE

Thanks for checking out little "Gretchen" my 1959 Opel Rekord Olmpia Caravan, ome people call them Kombi's across the globe. These are very neat little cars, xtremely hard to find, nd rare to see today, ust a hoot to drive, o one knows what it is when they see it, ome think it looks like Nash, tudebaker, uick, hevy, ntil they see the name. Everyone always says, never ever heard of such a car, specially a 2 door station wagon especially here in the states. These are just a blast to take out on the backroads through the countryside. This Opel was built in West Germany and roots goes way back to 1935, he Olympia actually was Germanys first mass produced car, t some point GM got involved with them, nd you see some styling from some of our favorite cars, r did the big 3 get it from German designers, ho knows. Until I saw this car, had never seen one, nbsp;let alone heard of one. I love theorphan cars, hings you don't see every day. Iwas planning on keeping this one, ut I am in the middle or a Messerschmitt restoration,so need to thin the herd, ut I am going to enjoy Lil' Gretchen until she sells. It is fun to have something different, ehicles that make people take notice and ask, hat is that. The styling is very different, rom the front to the rear, love the rear taillights, nd small wings, he white top with roof rack, op out side windows, nd the nose is just adorable. This is a small car, ut has plenty of room inside, ery fun to drive, specially if you like attention.

Mechanically it is in pretty good shape. Engine runs very good actually, t is all stock, urrs like a kitten. It does start right up, as choke on the dash, ust pull it a little bit, nd hit the gas, nd it fires right up. The engine idles nice, oes like to warm up a few minutes, oes not burn any major oil, nd does not blow smoke, o major oil leaks. Sometimes if it sits a little bit, hen it first starts it might puff a little smoke for a few seconds but then clears out quick, retty minor. It has plenty of power for its size, ut it is no powerhouse, t throttles very nice, ut you can get it up to 60mph out on the open road. It could use some exhaust repairs, he muffler has a hole, nd a hole in bend above axle. The transmission shifts nice, riginal 3spd manual, he previous owner, ut a new clutch, n it, o it is very smooth, nd works great. He had also rebuilt the brakes on it as well, o it stops very good, mergency brake works very good. As you can see from the engine compartment, t is very original. Mechanically it is in very good shape I believe. This will make a nice little project for someone, airly straight forward, f you have a little mechanical skills this will be a great for you to drive and restore as you go, r just drive it like it is. This little car does drive very nice, rives straight down the road, eally fun to drive.

Interior is original, nd will need some things obviously. Take a look at the photos, nd you will get a very good idea of what it is. The seats need recovered, ut they are very comfortable to sit in. Non Smoker, ery pleasant. The door panels are decent and also other interior panels. The spare tire area cover is missing. The trunk area under the floor is in great shape, nd under the back seats very nice condition. The rubber floor covering is brittle as you might imagine. The front rubber floor is very brittle, s you can see in the photos there are vintage floor mats in it, he passenger side when you pull it out, he original rubber flooring is missing in some areas. The actual floors on this Olympia are very good, ut on the passenger side, ou can see in the corner it is rusty, nd needs repaired, t is actually not as bad as it looks, he rust issues on this car, re very isolated, he rest of the floors look really good in the car, specially underneath. Take a look at the photos, nd you can see the needs that the interior could benefit from. You can see the horn ring, s broken, nd various other components need upgraded from age. The headliner is in great condition. The glove box is in great shap, he wipers are currently not working, ot sure what is going on with them yet. The heater fan works and it seems to heat good. All the exterior lights are working on it, nd interior dash lights don't come one, ut dome light works. The horn does not work either. The odometer and speedometer both work, as gauge and temp gauge work. Believe it or not, he Clock does work, t is very interesting, ou wind it up, nd it tics away. Take a look at the interior, he photos really give you a good idea of what it looks like. All around the door jams look very good The glass is all in good shape, few rub marks from the wipers on the edges. I do not have a key for the door locks or glove box, he windows roll up and down nice, nd the center side windows pop out at the rear. The gaskets around the doors, nd windows are very old, nd will need replaced if you are so inclined down the road.

I am not sure if it has been fully repainted, ut it has had some spot paint in some areas, his car is a true survivor though, ust up kept through the years, ot a garage queen by any means. You obviously will see some rust, ut it is very isolated on this car, he top of the fenders on both sides up high, ut the inner wall of the fenders are super solid and nice, his must have been something common. The bottoms of both quarter panels, eed replaced at very bottom, gain easy to fix. The rockers look very nice though, round the wheel lips and behind the rear wheels are excellent. The car is pretty solid, ut it does have a few needs. You have to remember this is car that has survived through the years, nd the gentleman kept care of it, o keep it useful. The paint is not great on the car, ons of scratches, hips, ub threw on the paint showing primer spots, tc. Myself personally, would want to keep the patina on the car, ust drive it and enjoy it, aybe fix the rust spots, nd patina finish those areas to match the rest of the car, ust make it a nice driver. Honestly the body is good, ou could paint this pretty easy and make it a really sweet ride The car structurally is very sound, t is a unibody car, he frame rails, nd inner rockers are in really nice condition, ut the support on the passenger side, eeds some repairs, ut easy to get to and you can fix when you do the area of the floor. Please take a look at the photos, he paint is old, here are chips and small scratches onit. You an see the chrome has pitting, rim has dings and such, rear taillight s are faded. Overall, he car is sound, nd a very good driver. You will probably just leave it the way it is, nd just drive it and enjoy it. I would take it to any car show or cruise in any day of the week, t does show well, ven with itspaint and issues, ut I bet you win something at every show youattend, orrare, ute, interesting and uniqueIt has very good tires on it, hey probably have about 85% on them, t is wearing a new set of white wall Portawalls, f you want to take them off you can, hey fit very nice, o one realizes they are portawalls actually when I mention it. Also noticethe 13" wheels, nd original hubcaps, ard to find, ven the spare tire and jack are original .
