Oldsmobile fanatics & aficionados, if you have been searching for a classic Oldsmobile muscle car that checks every single box when it comes to an investment-grade vehicle, then you will want to take a very close look at this amazing Oldsmobile W-machine!
‘Red Hills Rods & Classics’ is very proud to offer you this absolutely stunning, all numbers matching, rotisserie restored & fully documented 1970 Oldsmobile Cutlass W31 Sport Coupe! The Dr. Oldsmobile campaign w/ its classic horror movie vibe of a mad scientist creating a monster for the street was so visually arresting that it remained powerful even in black and white, which also stayed true to the Hollywood era it was depicting. Submitted beneath the exaggerated characters, smoke & vintage laboratory props were detailed specifications regarding Oldsmobile’s W-Machines. The combination of a comprehensive powertrain, chassis engineering and lots of horsepower, wrapped in a stylish & modern looking A-body, made the new W-machine cars a hot contender for attracting the performance-craving youth market.
This ‘perfect’ W31 that you are looking at now underwent a no-expense spared, nut & bolt rotisserie restoration in 2010 by Troy Thornton @ Thorntons Restorations, and the final result is nothing short of breath-taking. It is one of only (6) produced in the Special-Order paint combination of Sebring Yellow w/ White Stripes, and retains all of its factory original sheet metal, as well as it’s all numbers-matching driveline. Factory options include: (W31) Performance Package, (W25) Ram-Air Hood, (W35) Rear Deck Spoiler, (U21) Rocket Rally Pac, (D35) Outside Sport Mirrors, (N34) Custom Sport Steering Wheel, (FE2) Sport Suspension, Power Steering, Power Front Disc Brakes, Auxiliary Lighting Package, Black Deluxe Interior w/ Strato-Bucket Seats, Center Console, AM-FM Stereo, and Super Stock II Wheels w/ Firestone Wide Oval Bias Ply Tires. The (W27) Aluminum Axle Cover was added during the restoration process and really adds that final touch to the car. After the restoration work @ Thorntons, it was shown @ The 2010 Oldsmobile Nationals where it took home ‘First Place’ in its class.
We know this particular Olds W31 very well, as back in 2012 we acquired the car after it was shown numerous times, and immediately sold it to a collector in New Hampshire. The amazing part is that this collector stored the car in his climate-controlled facility and never drove it a single mile after the purchase. In his own words, he simply felt that the car was ‘too perfect’ to take a chance of anything happening to it out on the road. Fast-forward eight years, and when he decided that it was time to sell the car, he called us first and we immediately purchased it back. When we unloaded it off of the truck, we were amazed to see that not only was the mileage exactly the same as it was when it left us in 2012, but that the car was in the same ‘perfect’ condition as when it left our showroom eight years ago. You really have to see this car in person to appreciate the overall quality & workmanship. All of the original body panels are laser-straight all of the way around, and the Sebring Yellow paint has a bright lustrous shine that literally explodes in the sunlight. All of the chrome & stainless steel trim is in ‘show-quality’ condition throughout. She sits on the factory original Super Stock II wheels, wrapped w/ Firestone Wide Oval G70-14 Bias Ply tires, just like she did on the showroom floor 50 years ago. The undercarriage is as nice as the top-side, w/ the correct overspray, and all of the markings, stickers, tags, etc., that you would expect from a ‘concourse’ show car.
When you open the driver’s door and slide inside, you will find the ‘perfect’ factory-correct Black Deluxe Interior w/ Strato-Bucket seats & center console. These Oldsmobile A-body interiors are laid out beautifully, and this one is about as fine as they come. All of the original gauges, lights, blinkers, clock, horn, etc., are in perfect working condition, and the AM/FM radio sounds great. Even the lighter pops out hot! Again, nothing was overlooked during the comprehensive nut & bolt restoration. If feels so good sitting behind the custom sport steering wheel w/ your right hand firmly gripping the Hurst shifter, while looking out over the massive Ram-Air hood! Of course, the trunk area is completely restored w/ the correct OEM trunk mat, original Super Stock 1 spare wheel w/ Firestone Wide Oval G70-14 Bias Ply spare tire, and correct jack assembly. You will notice in the photos that the trunk lid was signed by Troy Thornton, as well as the late Oldsmobile aficionado, Joe Mondello (RIP).
Pop open the hood, and nestled inside the beautifully detailed engine bay resides the original numbers-matching 350ci/325hp W31 Ram-Air motor lathered in the easily recognizable Oldsmobile gold paint. All of the engine components: heads, intake manifold, carburetor, exhaust manifolds, etc., are original to the car and everything is date-code correct throughout. The motor is linked the to the original numbers-matching Muncie M21 4-speed transmission, which feeds power to the original numbers-matching 3.91 Positraction 12-bolt rear-end. Of course, the entire driveline was rebuilt to factory specifications during the restoration process. She fires up instantly, settling into a nice smooth idle, and she runs, drives and performs beautifully in every possible way. These high-revving W31 motors run very strong and I can see why they were so popular w/ drag-racers back in the day. The M21 4-speed transmission shifts smooth & tight, just as you would expect from a car of this caliber. This Cutlass W31 is an absolute BLAST to drive and she performs just as good as she looks. Original documentation includes: Original Broadcast Card, Original Owner’s Manual, Original Warranty Booklet, Window Sticker, Registration Slips from 1970 to the Present, Oldsmobile Nationals Score Sheets, Oldsmobile Nationals 'First Place' Award Plaque, a Complete Stack of Receipts from Thornton Restorations, etc.
