I knew the previous owner because he performed restoration work for some friends over the years, and he owned this Olds for a number of years. He's always had his own personal resto-mod in the works, which in the past included a Superbird, Tran-Am SD, Grand National, and a Chevelle SS Clone that we sold for him right here on ebay last year for $38,600). Unfortunately he passed away in January. This car has been driven just over 5,000 miles since its completion, and garaged the rest of the time. Back when he started the resto-mod project on this Olds, I often reminded him to let me know when he decided to sell it, so when his family was selling his shop equipment and vehicles, I bought this car. Why was I so interested in this 442? When I was 19 years old, I bought my first muscle car - a 1969 Hurst Olds. Three years later I got myself a 1970 Olds 442 in black and gold, which I kept for seven years. I had an exterior restoration completed on that 442, which included complete refinishing in a paint scheme similar to a Hurst Olds. (The last photo below shows both of those cars). This Olds was a southern car in great shape when he acquired it. There wasn't any body rust or structural damage to deal with, which made the restoration a lot easier. It was originally a Cutlass with white interior, equipped with bucket seats, console, and 350ci V8 with TH350 transmission. This restoration was completed six years ago, and this is what I know about the resto/mod and what was done for this project: The original paint was stripped to bare metal, and this car was totally refinished in a 442 W-30 paint scheme. A W-25 ram air hood was installed with functional twist lock pins. The correct grills and rear spoiler were also installed. A 442 dual exhaust cutout rear bumper was located, and both bumpers were re-chromed and installed. A set of 14" Olds Rally wheels were installed with the correct new Polyglas G70-14 tires, which are showing 90% of their tread. The undercarriage was also stripped and refinished. Everything you see under this car is either new or reconditioned, which includes all of the following: - Every brake line, fuel line, and hose. All of the control arms, suspension joints, and bushings. A reconditioned steering box. Steering pump and all steering linkage. All of the springs and shocks. Both of the sway bars and linkage. The fuel tank and straps. Reconditioned driveshaft and new u-joints. The complete dual exhaust system with chrome trumpet tips.
- The entire brake system. Master cylinder and proportioning valve. All brake rotors & drums. Both front calipers. All backing plates. All brake pads/shoes, hardware & cables.
- A totally rebuilt 455ci engine with deep sump oil pan.
- A rebuilt 700R4 Transmission with Overdrive and shift improvement kit.
- A 12-bolt 3.91 posi-rear. Totally rebuilt and powder coated.
- A new radiator, hoses, fan, and auxiliary electric fan.
The interior was also fully attended addressed: -
There is new carpeting and pads. A correct new headliner. The seats were completely re-upholstered. The console shifter has the correct position indicator for the overdrive transmission. -
An original 4-spoke sport steering wheel was installed with proper working horn. -
A few gauges were added and a Sony stereo was installed. This car looks gorgeous. You can spend 2-4 times more money for a real 442, but you'll be hard pressed to find a nicer original or tribute than this one. The body is very straight and clean. The paint is super glossy and lustrous over the full exterior. The interior is fresh, clean and in fabulous condition as well. This is a car that is totally streetable, and reliable enough to be a daily driver. It fires right up, runs super strong, and cruises easily at high speed (overdrive transmission). But most importantly - IT LOOKS AWESOME, and is ready to drive home today. NOTE: The windows have aftermarket tint installed, which we can easily remove prior to pickup at no cost if desired. Feel free to call me with any questions. |
