1973 MERCEDES BENZ 450 SL!!
64K ORIGINAL MILES!!
HARD TOP/SOFT TOP!!
When the 1970's rolled around our Country shifted from muscle cars to less powerful large cars that simulated how we lived. Cars came standard with simulated wood-grain, shag carpet and plush upholstery and were gigantic in stature and appearance. Also, by the 1970's our imports were starting to gain some ground in the streets of America and in our luxury department Lincoln and Cadillac started to become complacent. The Mercedes Benz offered a different kind of luxury, a more refined look and engineering that was second to none. All of a sudden Mercedes Benz made it to our garages and the Cadillacs were pushed to the driveways. Through out the 70's and 80's you can see attempts by our luxury car divisions to try and mimic the look and feel of German engineering and design but sadly they couldn't come close. Detroit has learned to play nice in the sand box with the European luxury car market and it enabled our country to have our ownidentity, our own style and taste. Luxury, in this era, finally gave us a selection.....bigger always didn't mean better and Mercedes proved that finer things could come in smaller packages. Please read on to find out about this rare find Mercedes Benz 450 SL. And scroll down to view all the pictures and video at the bottom.
This is a two owner vehicle that has been in storage for most of its life. The last time the vehicle saw the road, other then the day we took it out to photo and video it, was in 1998. The car was repainted many years ago and was changed from Beige to Black. It was a high quality job and it took me to decode the numbers to find out the color change. There are no visible signs of a color change. They did a fabulous job.
Exterior:
The exterior is gorgeous. The pictures do speak for itself. The paint holds great lu ster and is very straight and solid. We removed the car from storage, washed it, polished it and vacuumed it....thats it. If you're good with a buffer and have knowledge on getting blemishes out of clear coat that would do this car justice. Its a 5 footer but up close you can see leaf marks, bird dropping marks etc. I say that only for the real picky buyer. The bright work is in excellent original condition and the flaws were pointed out in the pictures. All the glass is near perfect. The previous owner stated they installed a new convertible top before storage. The rear plastic of the convertible top has some small stains from storage and needs to be cleaned. No rips or cracks or holes in canvas. The hardtop comes with factory rear defrosters. The hubcaps are colored matched to the car and the tires have flat spots for sitting so long. The pinstripe has been painted on. Please let us know of any questions you may have.
Interior:
The interior is all original with the exception of the aftermarket stereo equipment. The minor flaws are as follows(all pointed out in pictures and video) There is a crack in the center console vinyl. The driver's door panel has a separation in fabric and other then normal wear and tear, the interior is in beautiful original condition. The passenger power window does not work. The motor is good but the regulator needs to be repaired to replaced. All the gauges function properly. The driver's door sill is dry and cracking and will need to be replaced. The passenger's is intact. It even has the plug in flash light in the glove box. Also has the original owner's manual and some documents of maintenance documenting miles. Please take a look at the photos and let us know of any questions.
Drive-Train:
The car comes with its original V-8 and automatic transmission. As I stated in the video, the drive train could stand a tune up, fluid change and a going over before you decide to drive it daily. The car has been sitting for at least 10 years in a climate controlled indoor environment. It was started periodically only. When driven today for the first for more then 25 feet I noticed flat spots in the tires. The braking needs to be services. Brake pedal is good and stopping is good but you can tell the calipers are stopping uneven. I do notice some minor seepage around gaskets which will probably swell back up after use. The motor sounds good and the tranny shifted fine. Just needs a going through to be road worthy. The exhaust doesn't leak and the shocks seem ok. I've notice some new rubber brake lines when the car was up in the air. Please let us know of any questions you may have.
In Summation:
This is the first year of the 450SL and the last year of the small bumper Benzes. These cars are hard to find with low miles. It is being offered at NO RESERVE and really only needs minor tinkering to be road worthy and a good detail to enhance what you already have! Thank you for looking.
