Car description

1969 Mercedes W114 250 Sedan

The W114 was introduced in 1968 as Mercedes’ midsize luxury/executive car. It had a brand new chassis with a ball joint front end and semi trailing arms to locate the independent rear. Four wheel disc brakes were standard. Along with the modernized chassis was a new Paul Bracq designed body. The expansive “greenhouse” with exceptional visibility in all directions is one of its notable features of this body, similar to the ones Bracq did for the same period BMW sedans. The W114 was updated in 1973 and replaced in 1977 with the W123

This example is powered by the 148 HP 2.5 liter (152 CID) single OHC, 7 main bearing straight six. The dual two-barrel Zenith 35/40 INAT carburetors have been replaced with Weber 32/36 DGEVs, but the Zeniths are included with the sale. The transmission is Mercedes’ column shifted 4 speed automatic.

This car was bought new at Phil Smart Mercedes in Seattle (now Mercedes-Benz of Seattle) and has remained in the area its whole life. This was the original owner’s “baby”. He had it serviced every 3,000 miles at the delivering dealer. All services are logged and dealer stamped in the Service Booklet. The last entry was in August of 1988 at 61,974 miles. The car currently has 77,200 miles on it. The owner clearly loved this car and has made copious notes in the Service Booklet, the Owners Manual, and the Service Manual (all included with the sale).

The car is essentially like a 2-3 year old, carefully maintained used car. The original paint is in excellent condition with a few minor touched up chips. There are no dings or dents. There is no sign of rust or rust repair. The door jambs are unblemished. The interior is like new including the MB-Tex seats, the dash, door cards, carpets, headliner, etc. The paint in the wheel wells still shows nicely. Everything works including the windshield washers, the Blaupunkt AM/FM Frankfort, and the original Kangol magnetic seat belts, The complete tool kit is present as is the factory supplied 6.95H 14 spare tire. The wiper arms and blade holders are original argent Bosch…not the common flat black plastic replacements. The hubcaps are unmarked. All chrome and rub strips are excellent. The 600 and 3000 mile rear axle oil change sticker is still on the driver’s door jamb. The rubber cover on the driver’s door threshold has a piece broken out.

The engine delivers nimble performance. The transmission shifts nicely. Steering is crisp. The ride is smooth, but it is still clearly a driver’s car and handles the twisties like a much smaller car. The tires are near new. The exhaust system from the “Y” back is new, but it has been fabricated by an exhaust shop and is not Mercedes OE parts. The undercarriage is clean, but not show car detailed.

All books and records come with the car including the vehicle data card. Also included are a set of all weather floor mats, a new set of carpet mats and a set of near new sheepskin covers for the front seats (I removed these when I bought the car. The stock seats are just too pretty to cover up).

I have owned the car for two years. I now have too many vehicles in my “fleet” so something has to go. During my ownership, I have continued to maintain it “in the style to which it is accustomed”, tuned it, and detailed it. The battery is 4 months old. I have also installed an electric fuel pump to prime the carburetors since I drive it so infrequently
