1983 Ford Mustang Convertible
Why is it called the "Fox" platform? I am unable to find a sure reason why Ford identified this chassis as "Fox". Some people say that it had something to do with VW's "Rabbit" but I can't confirm that. I assume the Fox name has something to do with how Ford downsized their vehicles. Ford's vehicles went from being big like a cow to small and nimble like a Fox.
Here we go, a Foxbody convertible, 6-cylinder sexy grocery getter, Mustang from 1983. A very clean, well-kept car with a low consigner stated mileage of 68,665 original miles, 5 year old respray still looking very fine in Blackcherry, and a contrasting red interior. If I'm still not floating your boat, read on and fasten your seatbelt!
Exterior
Blackcherry bathes this car and is in very nice condition with no rust, and is wrapped up with body colored matching trim, all also very nice. Color coordinated bumpers sport a wide midsection in body matching vibrant Blackcherry colored trim that encircles the car. As we move, let's stop at the beautiful like new black canvas convertible top, complete with a glass rear window, also in nearly perfect condition. It moves up and down flawlessly, and when down, you get to enjoy the sun beaming on your face, and the wind in your hair. 15 inch aluminum 10 hole wheels are on all 4 corners, and the only chrome seen is in the form of the GLX badge...and blue ovals...very tasty.
Interior
A fine mix of leather and vinyl wrapped in red, and totally blemish free, cover the front high back buckets with headrests, and rear 2 plus 2 bench. Padding is excellent and these seats tend to grab you upon entering. All seating sports nicely preserved red piping on the borders. Awesome black seatbelts keep you secure, and a red center console races past the buckets toward the dash. This houses the black shifter, and then makes its way upward making space for a graphic readout denoting low fuel, a light out, and washer fluid level, along with a quartz clock. An aftermarket pioneer AM/FM/CD player sound system. The dash front is wood appliqu early 1980's square and rectangle design, with the gauge cluster presenting very clean. Fronting the dash is an original steering wheel with cruise control buttons. In their red clad vinyl glory, door panels are nearly showroom, and house the power windows, locks and sport mirror controls. It's tempted to dig my bare feet in the wonderfully preserved red thick pile carpet. MMMMMmm good!
Drivetrain
A lift of the hood and we see an original unrestored engine and 3.8 Liter 105hp V6 topped with a 1-bbl carburetor. This mill is tucked away within numerous wires, and hoses. Slight surface rust, but no corrosion on any parts... so let's call it clean original. On the back is a C5 3-speed automatic transmission.
Undercarriage
A nice patina of aged black paint, and very slight surface rust is seen throughout. Structure of the unibody is very sound, as is suspension, front disc brakes and rear drums.
Drive-Ability
I love these Fox bodied Mustangs and was anxious to taste the Blackcherry with red interior 3.8 liter version described within. It did not disappoint with a quick lighted fire, and smooth idle, we are off with a pop of the shifter to D. Plenty of power, great handling, and I felt like a million bucks behind this wheel. I had to remind myself I was in a car with fairly low mileage and straight out of 1983. The ac/heat blow cold and hot respectively, and all gauges and power functions were working swimmingly.
If you are in the market for some 1983 eye candy in the form of a very nicely preserved Fox body 3.8 liter luxury convertible, look no further, as this one is a beauty. It is hard to find any real discernible faults on this classic, which catered to the upscale Mustang crowd. We give you the GLX. Made for the sporty minded gentleman or lady, who likes being surrounded by luxury, but looking young while doing it.
