You don't come across the opportunity to own Fox-bodies like this 1987 Mustang LX 5.0 very often. This super-slick and recently refreshed black stallion looks simply stunning from all angles, has an all-new comfortable interior, and is powered by a venerable 5.0L HO V8 mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. If you're looking for a quintessential 'modern-muscle' car, they really don't get much cooler than this sinister notch-back.
The slick black exterior on this LX really stands out – starting with paint that becomes ever more impressive as you get closer. Repainted in 2019 to a great driver-grade standard, it has a deep, lustrous shine that seems to come from an inch below its surface. It's not some dainty garage queen that was never meant to be driven, so it has a few minor finishing imperfections here and there, although a professional cut-and-buff would alleviate many of those concerns. While the Fox body design on this '87 represented a pretty major aerodynamic change from previous generations of Mustangs, the glossy paint, cowl induction hood, and notch-back rear make that difference even more obvious. Other features ushered in for the 1987 facelift included a restyled Aero front end that was modeled after the SVO, louver-less quarter glass windows scripted with 'Mustang' decals, and revised taillights specific for the LX that included clear lenses for the turn signals. The notch-back version of the Fox-body was always incredibly sought-after, not just for the cool look, but also because it increased rigidity and stiffness through the corners, resulting in a better handling car. Mustang fans all over the world really distinguish the notch-back as something special - almost a different model altogether. All the glass, trim, and rubber around the windows is in good shape too, and all the lights are crisp and clear. Bottom line, this is a heck of good looking car.
Inside you'll find a super clean restored red interior, accented nicely by the black piping on the seats, and black dash area and steering wheel. Look below you and you'll see plush red carpeting with pile that certainly hasn't borne the weight and wear of many shoes, topped with a set of black floor mats that add to the two-tone theme of this Mustang. To either side, the original red door panels still sit flush and are free of wrinkles, and up above the headliner is taut and shows very well. From the hardly worn surfaces of the center console and dash area to the amply padded bucket seats in front and bench seats in back, the uniformly clean condition of this Mustang is truly impressive. If Tupperware could be made large enough to fabricate a garage, it seems that's exactly where this one has taken up residence. Function matches form here, as well, and you'll find an A/C system that blows R134a refrigerant, fully functional gauges with crystal clear lenses, power windows that roll up and down smoothly, power locks, as well as cruise control and an AM/FM cassette system that still performs without a hitch. The steering wheel feels great inside the hands of the driver, and the original shifter for the 5-speed is just a short reach away. Even the trunk area appears almost exactly as it would have nearly 30 years ago when this Fox-body was new.
The 5.0 V8 powerplant like the one at the heart of this Mustang has developed a well-earned reputation over the years for dependable service, to the extent that 5.0's are often used as the foundation for aftermarket upgrades due to their durability. This one is in optimum shape - firing up right away, idling as if new and it's paired with a similarly well-regarded 5-speed manual transmission. Almost everything is OEM stock, with signs of maintenance found throughout, while the aftermarket shorty headers help the small block breathe easy through the Flowmaster dual exhaust system. Factor in power steering and power brakes at all four corners - with discs in front - and you have a configuration that promises exhilarating but hassle-free motoring. Have a look below and you'll see a nice, dry undercarriage, with no signs of leaks. Finishing the sporty look, this impressive Pony sits on a set of blacked-out 17" ZR rims wrapped in low-profile performance tires.
Looking for a Fox-body notch-back Mustang with slick paint, a dialed-in interior, and a more-than-capable powertrain that's a load of fun to drive. They don't get much better than this 1987 Mustang LX. Call today!
