Dare to be Different.
Never pay for gas again. No maintenance, no oil changes, no muffler, no radiator.
Fill your tires with air and enjoy a free ride with the only sound coming from the radio.
1985 4 Door Ford Escort converted by Solar Electric Car Corporation.
This is the 10th year that I have owned the car in subzero Minnesota, already paid for itself because of no gas and no maintenance required.
DC Electric Motor coupled to transmission has 73,000 miles. These motors can last for 1 million miles. They only have 1 moving part and they are noiseless and clean without a 1000 moving pistons.
Runs on 108 volts(18 Crown 6volt Deep Cyle Batteries wired in series)
Batteries the most expensive part of the car purchased 1 year ago(have receipt). Batteries if well maintained last 9 years.
Curtis 1221C Controller which supplies 108v from the Batteries to the Electric Motor. I have an extra spare in case the controller fails
Zivan NG3 charger 240volt input with 15amp output. Vehicle charges in 4-6 hours after driven 40 miles. Costs me $10.00 a month electric bill to charge this car at night
New Elcon Dc-Dc converter($300) to operate your lights, heat, radio, wipers, brakes.
Vacuum brake pump less than 3 years old
Pros:
1. 40+ mile Range, speeds up to 60 miles per hour.
2. Great for intown driving and saves you so much in gas. After several years of gas saving, car pays for itself. 90% of your driving is in town. Use your gas car for longer distances>30 miles out of town
3. The Deep Cycle Batteries can be easily taken out and replaced with Lithiums which will provide you with a longer driving range and life-span. Lithium prices are much more affordable now.
4. Noiseless
5. No maintenance. Over the past 10 years, been to the mechanic 3 times for relatively minor issues
6. Batteries about 1 year old with less than 500 miles(Batteries cost $1900.00 have receipt)
7. Spare Curtis 1221C controller($800.00)
8. Painted red in 2010
9. So easy to drive...drives like an automatic! However when you put it in reverse, you have to press the accelerator pedal slowly/gingerly or it jumps on you. Minor issue, after a couple of times you will get the hang of it and it's not a problem at all when you press slowly. Forward driving is smooth and accelerates to 60 without any hesitation, without any jerking, no movement at all. Car is steady and drives straight.
Cons:
1. You need to be meticulous in maintaining your Batteries(the most expensive part of the car)
2. The car needs to be in a garage especially if you live in the East Coast or Central USA
3. Need a 220-240 volt outlet in the garage to charge the car
4. Range in the winter drops by more than 50%…Batteries are warm blooded
5. Needs new floor carpeting
6. Minor dent on the hood, 2 small areas of rust about 4 inches in the rocker panels, some minor tears in the seats, NO AC, has heat, left driver side door opener needs to be replaced.
7. Both rear tires should be replaced in the next year.
