Car description |
---|
It has a remarkably solid, mostly rust free body with original paint. This truck has had no bodywork ever done to it. The only rust through on the body of the truck that I've found is on the front of the drivers side fender above the headlight and some small holes on the running boards. This is extremely minor for its age and very impressive to see on an un-restored 1955 work truck. The floorboards are very impressive and remarkably solid. The door bottoms are also rust free. The running boards are in good shape with no rust. All emblems are present. There are a few typical farm work related dents on this trucks fenders. It has the typical dump bed (hoist) that many 1 ton and larger prairie farm trucks of this era were fitted with and it functions very well. Overall this is a good solid and original example of a very rare 1955 Mercury M Series pickup truck.
The interior is complete, very clean and inexcellent condition for its age with a very nice instrument cluster. Everything works and the instrument cluster illuminates with the headlights.
This truck starts and runs remarkably well. Even starting from cold it fires instantly with a little choke and idles right away. It has its original Y Block V8 and it does not leak and shows to have been very well maintained. The clutch is very smooth with a nice bite. It shifts through all gears effortlessly. The brakes work well and have no problem stopping this large truck. All lights work. The tires are in excellent condition. This truck can be reliably and confidently driven into town. The only mechanical issues I have identified is a leaking rear axle seal, most likely because one bolt is missing. And the front passengers side wheel cylinder looks to be a little damp.
Due to the much smaller Canadian market, Ford of Canada only sold approximately one tenth as many trucks as Ford did in the US and around two thirds of those were Ford's leaving the remaining third to be Mercury's. So very few of these trucks were produced and it is becoming much harder for us to source nice original and complete examples such as this. Due to Canada's harsh climate only a handful remain today.1955 was the second lowest production number year for Mercury trucks followed after even lower production in 1954. This is due to huge wheat surpluses for the first time since before the war causing farm incomes to rapidly decline in 1954/55. This in turn had a huge affect on Canadian farmers purchasing trucks due to wheat being Canada's largest agricultural commodity. This wasn't such an issue out east so you will find more 54/55 Mercury trucks out east but the trouble is they are all severely eaten away by rust. It is very seldom that you see 54/55 out west where the climate is much kinder to the body's making this a very special find. We've had an abundance of 1953 Mercury trucks but this is the first 1955.
This will make a great project being that it is a very rare truck with very little rust to contend with and in untouched original condition. It deserves to be used and driven again. Selling withNo Reserveto the highest bidder. We describe these vehicles as thoroughly as possible with detailed photographs as we are aware the majority of buyers are a long way away. You are more than welcome to view the truck, have it inspected and request as many photos as you like before the auction ends.
If you would like a shipping quote please message us and we will provide you with the contact information of our preferred shippers that are very familiar with loading and hauling the type of vehicles that we sell.
