Car description

Exercised occasionally, this vintage Frd hauler underwent a meticulous restoration 35 years ago and has clocked no more than 200 miles since its renewal. The truck has been resting in the shelter of a garage with infrequent calls to show grounds or parades and is mechanically fully operable and ready to conquer new horizons.

The 1.5 dually has had only two past owners, the first a local safe company that transported its goods on the truck's sturdy oak bed from Portland, Or to San Francisco. The next long term owner bought the truck from the safe company decades ago and in the 80s set about restoring it. He and his team did an extraordinary job, overlooking nothing, and even after all these years the attention to quality and detail is seen everywhere. When the owner passed away, the truck was put in storage and the title assumed by his daughter, who is currently offering it for sale.

The Model AA six volt system is typically slow-turning but dependably kicks the 201 cubic-inch four cylinder into life. The forty hp engine is durable and trustworthy, rebuilt and finished by noted machinist Allan Schurman of Schurman Machine. Time has worked on the engine's appearance but with the scant miles put on the truck since the rebuild, it has barely any wear on it.

The three-speed with compound low shifts properly and the brakes takes hold as they should. The wipers work, but not the ampere gauge. Exterior lights operate. The troublesome ignition condenser has been bypassed with a toggle switch. As this truck is sold as a garage find, there are probably other minor areas that need sorting out.

Rust has never settled on this truck. It was purchased corrosion-free and so it has remained over most of a century. The truck was repainted in its factory Moss Rock Green finish, still glossy, but could profit from a light cut and buff. The chrome likewise would profit from a polish. The Ford radiator cap ornament depicts a quail in flight and it's a wonder it survived, original or repro we do not know.

Did we mention over-restored? The length of the dashboard sports painted woodgrain inlay and the rest of the interior is in leather and sumptious mohair, woven carpeting and velvety headliner and interior panels. All of this still presents very nicely, but could use some vacuuming and cleaning. Replica period tires are mounted on the big five-hole factory steel wheels and have deep tread but have probably passed their working life. The hardware on the stakebed needs new brass plating, but the oak planks remain tight and solid and ready for a beautiful refinish.

Since 1930, this big Ford pickup has accumulated only 48,487 miles. In a garage or out of it, it has burly, classic lines and is the last of a breed, a truly historical American truck.
