With only 1,400 miles and the original window sticker still affixed to the passenger-side window, this 1993 Cobra R is a very rare performance-bred Mustang as delivered by Ford. It is also equipped with the optional Traction-Lok rear axle. In February 1991, Ford announced the formation of a Special Vehicle Team to create and market limited-production performance models based on regular-production Ford vehicles. SVT wasted little time putting its purpose into action. Barely a year and a half later, the first 1993 SVT Cobras were arriving at Ford dealerships. The enhanced 5.0-liter Mustangs employed GT40 heads and intake to produce 235 horsepower, a tuned suspension for improved handling, enhanced braking with discs all around and unique body components for identification. Fewer than 5,000 street 1993 Cobras were built in that final year of the original Fox-body Mustang. To provide the new Cobra with a link to racing, Ford SVT also produced 107 versions with the Cobra R Competition Package, an upgrade designed to homologate high-performance equipment for racers competing in the IMSA Firestone Firehawk Grand Sport and SCCA World Challenge series. Offered only in Vibrant Red with Opal Gray interior, the Cobra R provided road racers with the foundation to build a competitive track car. Notably, the package included improvements to the suspension, brakes and cooling: convertible chassis bracing, revised spring rates for a lower stance, adjustable Koni struts and shocks, 13-inch front brake rotors with twin-piston calipers, larger radiator and oil cooler. The back seat, air conditioning, radio, power windows and power door locks were deleted to reduce weight. Externally, the fog lights were also removed providing openings for racer-installed brake-cooling ducts, and the 17-inch 6-spoke cast aluminum wheels sourced from the upcoming 1994 Mustang were painted black for a distinctive look.
