1 of 989 Challenger T/A’s produced with a 4-speed transmission. Very desirable Bright Red (FE5) with high grade black bucket seat interior (H6X9) and console (C16). This vehicle is a multi-time Mopars at Englishtown (formerly Mopar Atlantic Nationals) show winner, including the last time entered in 2014.
This 1970 Challenger T/A was purchased new at Chandler Motors in Linden New Jersey. I have signed documentation by the original owner that lists the options when it was ordered new. One rare option is the Special Edition carpeted lower door panels that were dealer installed.
I purchased this Challenger T/A in 1994, with 65,500 miles as documented on the title. I have owned it almost 25 years and have driven it just over 3,000 miles. It has never seen inclement weather and is always garaged and covered. It was previously owned by Jeff Coe. Jeff was the founder of the Challenger T/A Registry, currently managed by Barry Washington. This vehicle is in the T/A registry. Jeff purchased the vehicle in the early 80’s. With restoration in mind, Jeff purchased numerous NOS parts from Dodge dealerships while still available. Some of the NOS parts used for the restoration included; front fenders, grille and head light bezels, front exhaust pipes, mufflers and exhaust tips, tail light bezels, flip top gas cap and more. I added some hard to find NOS items including a locking gas cap, idle solenoid and more. Imagine what the cost of these NOS parts would be today, if you could find them! Included is a thick folder of receipts and documentation dating back to the early 80’s.
The restoration of the body and interior was completed in the 90’s and looks fantastic to date. The body is super straight and the exterior painted in the original code FE5, “Bright Red” with PPG acrylic lacquer and retains a beautiful deep shine. The door jambs, engine and trunk compartments were painted with PPG Delstar acrylic enamel to emulate the factory luster. Once again, this vehicle has been driven just over 3,000 miles during my 25 years of ownership.
The car is numbers matching except for the unstamped factory T/A replacement engine block. The vehicle retains both original fender tags, including the Trans Am tag. The numbers on the dash VIN, driver side door decal and radiator support all match. No build sheet was found in the vehicle when restored.
During the past year, the entire drive train and suspension were totally disassembled, rebuilt and detailed by a Mopar specialist. The documented cost was over $25,000. The engine was bored and stroked to 418 cubic inches and a solid lifter cam installed. The factory T/A heads were rebuilt with S/S valves, hardened seats and heavy duty valve springs. The original T/A rocker assemblies were rebuilt. The 3x2 Holley carbs were rebuilt and tweaked to handle the extra horsepower. The results on the engine dyno came in at 450-HP and 520-Torque. It runs like a scalded dog and has the power and torque of a big block. It will break the tires loose at 30 MPH in second gear! Looking at the engine it appears bone stock with the exception of a high torque starter.
The matching numbers 4-speed transmission was totally rebuilt. A new RAM clutch and HD pressure plate installed. The 8-3/4 rear end with 3.55 sure grip was disassembled, powder coated and rebuilt with new bearings and seals installed.
The engine compartment is detailed to look stock and factory correct. Has correct date coded wires, hoses and clamps, correct 2998974 radiator, correct 2863216 cooling fan and a new reproduction “070” fan clutch and a restored date coded 3-speed wiper motor. Many of the correct detail items for the engine and suspension were purchased from Frank Badalson, Roger Gibson Restorations, Bill Rolik, Tony’s Parts and Mega Parts, to name a few.
The rare and correct master cylinder casting #2229171 was rebuilt by John Stuart in Ontario, Canada. The correct #3461118 power brake booster was rebuilt by Booster Dewey in Portland, Oregon.
New brake and fuel lines installed front to rear. The rear brake drums and original style two piece front rotors were powder coated. New rear brake shoes and hardware installed. NOS front brake calipers and hardware installed. Complete set of reproduction emergency brake cables front to rear.
The front suspension was completely rebuilt and detailed as the photos show. The “K” frame, engine pulleys, cooling fan, air cleaner base, engine breather and numerous suspension components powder coated.
The floor and trunk pans are the originals and solid and have never been replaced. The trunk contains the correct jack, space saver spare and reproduction inflator bottle. The factory fiberglass hood is in great shape and has the typical “bowing” caused by the springs. The chrome bumpers, stainless trim and side marker assemblies are all excellent. The “CHANDLER” Dodge nameplate was restored and is intact on the rear spoiler. The list goes on…..
Please note: The vehicle as pictured is currently riding on 15 x 7 Rally Wheels with BFG Radial TA tires. I have the original set of #2944450 stamped steel wheels with Dodge dog dish hub caps and trim rings with reproduction Goodyear Polyglas GT tires mounted. They are in excellent condition. The winning bidder will have choice of preference of one set. The second set can be purchased by the winning bidder for an additional fee if desired.
Changes from stock are as follows:
Mopar electronic ignition was added to improve performance. The ECU is hidden under the dash.
Originally built with manual steering and was converted to power steering using all correct parts.
An Alpine stereo is installed in the stock location. Amplifiers are mounted to a custom MDF board in the trunk, behind the rear seat. ABSOLUTELY NO METAL WAS CUT. The original AM/FM radio and associated wiring is included with the vehicle and can easily be returned to stock.
A set of Auto Meter oil pressure and water temperature gauges mounted under the dash to accurately monitor the engine vitals. The rally gauges all function, except for the clock.
Please view the photos and message me through eBay with any questions prior to bidding. Inspections of the vehicle are welcomed and by appointment only.
Serious inquiries only. Please do not bid or waste my time or yours if you do not have the funds readily available or need permission from a significant other to purchase.
