I bought this car from a buddy of mine who's owned it since the early 2000's. Prior to that is was a TX and TN car for many years. I have traced it back to 1982 in Corpus Christi Texas. It is a real honest car. The paint is mostly original but very thin and burnt in spots. Has dings and dents and scratches. Nothing terrible. LOOK CLOSELY AND SUPERSIZE MY PICTURES TO SEE everything. The Engine and transmission are NOT original to the car. This is a very solid car. Factory R4 Bright red with an almost mint black vinyl top. Bucket seat console car. No build sheet has been found yet. No real paperwork to speak of. Original Fender tag and Vin tag are present and original. The numbers on the radiator support and the trunk lip match. It's real.
First off the car runs and drives. The engine is believed to be rebuild with low miles. It was rebuilt to factory specs. It is a 1970 engine. The top raised pad reads the following...F440 9 4 HP2. Casting numbers are 2536430. The edelbrock intake and carbs look to be genuine. It has headers. The engine needs a full tune and the carbs should be re built. Stumbles on acceleration. When warmed up it runs good.The transmission is out of a '69 383 Roadrunner. It shifts good, clutch seems good. The rear end is a Dana 60. There are six leafs on drivers side and 5 leafs on passenger side. Brakes are manual. They seem ok when pumped a bit. This car has mostly sat over the last 11 years.
The interior is very nice. There has been new correct seat covers and carpet installed. Carpet could be a little tighter. The rear package deck, headliner, door panels, dash are all good. Console is good, Its original. Hurst shifter. Glass is all original Mopar glass. The front windshield has a bulls eye chip. Most the gauges work, are faded though. Gas gauge is slow. Tachometer and radio don't work. Odometer works and reads 99K miles?
As far as rust...The only rust visible is on the lower rear quarter panels. Very small holes, see pictures. Although this is a Southern car water did get into the trunk, and drivers floor pan by the base of the gas pedal. The trunk was beautifull replaced and plug holes were drilled out and plugs installed as factory. I think the extensions are still original. The tabs are still present. It was painted inside and looks great. Also the floor pan on the drivers side was replaced properly too. Every other piece of metal is original to the car to the best of my knowledge. As stated above the paint is mostly original. You know exactly what your getting here! Very honest car. The paint is thin and a looks to have had a little rattle can spray on part of the passenger front fender. Tops of the front fenders are dinged from constant hood removal and tuning.
The wheels look to be correct wheels. But I cannot varify this because the paint on them are thick. I do not see any "H" stampings. There is no jack or spare. Has a new trunk mat.The tires are 225 70 15 BF Goodrich silvertowns with the red lines. Great shape. Chrome lug nuts.
A Few stupid things were done to this car over the years. Down south in the boot legging days, rear panels of cars were painted black to hide from Law enforcement on dark county roads when being chased. From what I'm told drag racers did this too, hence the black painted rear! Shouldn't be too tough to remove the black. Also when the engine was replaced the engine compartment was shot black too. Correct would be body color. It has vintage traction bars. The hood I'm told is original. It was repainted and repaired here and there at some point in time and the hood pin hole ovals were riveted on. The hood looks good. Not great. But none the less I believe it to be factory.
To sum this car up...it is an honest car. It is real and in a very desirable color. It is a driver. You can take it to car shows and get the same attention the trailer queens get. Some people prefer to see them like this. The 4 speed makes this a blast to drive. It is far from perfect but this is how we used to find them years ago. The body numbers match and the original Fender tag is there. A build sheet was not found but could still be in other places.
