One of the best things about the classic car hobby is there is a car for everyone. Whether you want to invest in a blue-chip collectible or actually enjoy your machine on the open road without worry you can usually find something to suit your needs. Here at RK Motors Charlotte we specialize in bringing the hobby to all types of enthusiasts. Sure who wouldn't love to own a numbers-matching LS6 Chevelle? But rarities like that aren't usually driven further than a trailer sitting at the end of a driveway. It's cars like this 1968 Chevrolet Chevelle Super Sport that make the hobby fun and let us truly enjoy what these cars have to offer. With big block power a tough 4-speed gearbox and iconic good looks this Chevelle epitomizes what makes enjoying American muscle so much fun. If you've been looking to get behind the wheel of tire-scorching muscle car this Chevelle is the car for you!
BODYWORK/TRIM
Originally leaving the Kansas City plant as a Sequoia Green car this Chevelle is fresh out of a body-off rotisserie restoration that was completed in January 2015. That smooth and sorted body now wears a fascinating Emerald Green Metallic coat finished by a glossy clear. It's a finish that looks like it was adapted from a much more modern and luxurious car. In fact every person that has seen this car up close in our showroom has complimented on how nice of a color it is. It's one of those metallic hues you have to see to appreciate. With the bumpers grille and window moldings recently being re-chromed the chrome and stainless are just as impressive and show crisp reflections. Panel gaps are even all around and it's evident that the builders of this Chevelle took the time to carefully massage the sheet metal to smooth surfaces. The glass looks new and has a subtle smoke tint to it. Just enough to help with outside glare but not so much that any law enforcement will be giving you a hard time. Combine the muscular stance with the impressive glossy finish and prepare yourself for an influx of compliments!
ENGINE
According to the Protecto-O-Plate included with the sale this Chevelle started life with a 307 cubic inch V8. With a craving for power over authenticity the builders scrapped the 307 and a 454 block was sourced for the build. That big block was then built to 427/425HP specs. Topped by aluminum heads the motor's shorter stroke provides a rev-happy power mill that will still hold its own against its larger displacement brother. An Edelbrock 750 CFM carburetor and Edelbrock aluminum intake manifold provide air and fuel to the cylinders while an HEI distributor sends enough spark to ignite the pressurized mixture. Hedman headers direct the burnt gasses to a 3'' Flowmaster exhaust system to create a classic rumble that is synonymous with cars of this character. Those cylinder heads are capped by finned "427" branded valve covers while a matching finned air cleaner rides on top of the carburetor and finned spark plug wire organizers tidy up the already clean engine bay. A new aluminum radiator keeps engine temps in check and an AC Delco battery provides cranking power. And all of the ancillary components such as the polished A/C compressor spin on fresh belts and are fitted with new crack-free hoses.
DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION
When the engine fires to life it transfers torque to a tried-and-true Muncie M21 4-speed manual transmission. That M21 delivers power to a 12 bolt rear end which houses race axles and a new Eaton Positraction with 3.07 gears. Underneath it's apparent that the only road time this Chevelle has seen is the 39 miles that the odometer reads. The detailed undercarriage shows very well with clean floor pans finished to correct specifications. Hotchkis suspension components have been added throughout with upgraded trailing arms a front sway bar and tubular lower control arms to add some extra confidence in handling. Power steering and power brakes with discs up front increase the driver's confidence while chrome 15'' American Racing wheels are wrapped in 235/70R15 front and 255/70R15 rear BF Goodrich Radial T/As.
INTERIOR
Inside things mostly appear traditional while a keen eye will notice bits like the 3-spoke steering wheel dash and sport bucket seats being wrapped in black leather. The leather-wrapped and satin finished steering wheel sports a classic cross-flags horn button and sits on an Ididit tilting column. In front of that steering wheel is an instrument cluster that sports a vertical tachometer that has been re-worked to display accurate revs; a pricey project in itself. Vintage Air climate control has been added to maintain a comfortable driving environment and a Custom Autosound AM/FM stereo provides tunes and modern capabilities like CD changer control and USB/iPod connectivity. And connecting the driver to the big block while making sure all shifts are made accurately is a Hurst T-handle shifter.
