1947 Chevrolet School Bus
School days, school days
Dear old golden rule days
Reading and writing' and rith-me-tic
Taught to the tune of the hickory stick
You were my queen in calico
I was your bashful barefoot beau
And you wrote on my slate, "I love you, Joe"
When we were a couple of kids
I can hear the bell ringing in this consignment. Get to your room and listen up, we are about to learn something about our latest consignment. A 1947 Chevrolet originally titled as a station wagon until the Kowalski Customs Company got ahold of a 1986 Wolfington bus of Exton, PA rear "box" and magically mated the two, with the offspring being the Kool Bus! All excellent, with modern conveniences, a new engine, and a complete restoration. Your story of walking miles to school in shoes that were passed down from your siblings just went right out of the folding entry door.
Exterior
Quickly get your assigned seat, as 12 passengers can pile into this yellow submarine with its 1947 Chevrolet front, and 1986 Wolfington school bus box on back. The grille has been blackened as have the bumpers, and these are topped off above by a large bulbous front swinging hood with a big Chevrolet badge up front. Rounded fenders have a single chrome bezel headlight in front and frame 16.5 inch chromed front wheels with large wheel nuts in the center just like the big guys. The back is the box with yellow and black paint that is nearly perfect with no rust, tinted windows, a rounded back looking more like 1947 than 1986 (It most definitely was modded on to emulate an old bus) with its emergency exit door and flashing lights, you'll keep back 500 feet. Another black curved bumper with a centrally located step for the emergency door exit, and a 3-inch chrome exhaust tips peeking out the bottom. On back are dually tires which wrap 16.5-inch dish wheels in chrome, and ready for the first day.
Interior
Watch your step as you enter the ribbed rubber covered floor, it will take you 3 steps up to get to your seat and do it sweet. You are greeted by the single driver's seat in black vinyl with all the controls and door handle mechanism, a wood dash and round gauges. A late model Chevy steering wheel fronts this dash and has the automatic shifter on the column. Above is a central control panel with toggles for the lights and air conditioning and a volt gauge. Behind the driver's compartment are a lineup of 6 black vinyl covered benches which will seat two comfortably. These float on more rubber ribbed floors and behind these seats in back are a few mechanicals for the A/C, heat, and a circulating fan. White painted metal is covering the rest of the interior on the sides and roof interior. Please be reminded you will be stopping at all RR crossings where the folding door will be opened to complete the STOP/LOOK and LISTEN requirement.
Drivetrain
A flip of the clamshell front hinged hood allows full access to the engine bay which is a Rube Goldberg-esque maze of wires, hoses, bolt ons and maybe even the kitchen sink is there I just cannot see it immediately. Underneath all this gaggle is a 350ci V8 engine, backed by a 4-speed automatic and a Dana 60 rear.
Undercarriage
Some surface rust, some patina, but overall a solid frame and floor pan and a big fuel tank on back. A like new exhaust system is snaking its way towards the back through independent coil spring suspension upfront and leaf springs on back. Power disc brakes are on the front, and power drums are on back.
Drive-Ability
It's not every day one gets to drive a 1947 Kool Bus so I hopped on and fired it up. It sprang to life effortlessly, and it was off to my route and picking up the kids. Nice smooth acceleration, good solid braking, and quick and responsive power steering allowed me to handle this fairly large vehicle with ease. All lighting was working, and I was able to hold up traffic on main street for a good solid hour with my every block stops.
