In 1949 General Motors came out with one of their most iconic body styles the business coupe. This meant that the trunk was extra long and a short round roof to accommodate the extra long trunk. These cars were known as ‘bubble tops’ because the roof was very round like a bubble. This particular body at General Motors was used on Chevrolets. Pontiacs and Oldsmobiles. The most iconic of the bubble tops from 1949-50 (the same body in both years). was the 1950 Oldsmobile Bubble Top Coupe. The reason that this was the most popular with the hotrodders is that the Oldsmobile had a V8 engine where the Chevrolet had a straight six and the Pontiac had a flat head straight eight. Chevy used a 2-speed power glide but Pontiac and Oldsmobile used the 4-speed Hydramatic. Well just leave it up to some of the retro rodders like the gentleman that turned this 1949 Chevrolet Bubble Top (Business Coupe) into a true retro rod that surpasses even the iconic 1950 Oldsmobile bubble top. Yes! This car has it all. a 350 c. i. Chevy V8 bolted up to a 350 turbo automatic transmission. a full leather interior and much. much more. In early 2008. I decided that I would like to have an older car in good condition like the one that I drove as a young man. I set in mind to take my time and choose a car with the following qualities: A reliable drive that is built right. Built with quality & safety in mind. Air conditioning and heat. A head turner that can be shown. For over a year. using the Internet. going to car shows. reading magazines and having had two cars professionally inspected and appraised (negatively). I was ready to give up. On a whim. I flew to a Good Guys Car Show. There was nothing in the ‘car corral’ that interested me. However. at the show. I fell in love with a ’49 Chevy. To my dismay. it was not for sale. After numerous visits. I spoke with the owner/builder about the cr. I found out the drive train 350/350 was fairly new. The front end was from a Chevy Two with P/S and P/D/B. cold a/c and rear end from a Camaro. He stated he had taken over 300-400 mile trips with confidence. I knew then this car what I’ve been looking for. In talking. he mentioned he would consider selling it. I test drove it and loved it! WE had agreed on a price. I had it inspected. purchased and delivered within a week. I’ve never regretted my decision. In the past five years. I have driven it locally and long distance. I made upgrades including full undercoating. more chrome. new exhaust system. AM/FM/CD player. new tires and a custom leather (cowhide) interior including headliner.
