This 1972 Chevrolet Chevelle is a car that was built be driven all the time. Not just by anyone, I mean you, the person waiting for a great muscle car that's turn-key and doesn't cost too much. It's priced right, has a great small-block powertrain, bright orange paint, and comfortable A/C interior inside, adding up to a car that's a great balance of features and value. If you're not interested in paying extra for a superfluous pedigree, then this Chevelle is for you.
Painted in its original Code 65 Orange Flame when it was restored a few years ago, it has held up very well and looks great on the A-body shape, showing only minor imperfections upon closer inspection. It's plenty flashy, thanks in large help to the painted-on black SS stripes and cowl induction hood, but the cool color is at the same time very easy on the eyes, especially when it glows in the sunlight. No, it's not a $20,000 paint job and shows a few flaws here and there, but it was competently done with straight bodywork underneath and good gaps all around. Those black SS stripes, a cowl-induction hood, and SS badges give it a tough street presence, and honestly, buying a Chevelle without stripes is like buying an ice cream cone without the ice cream. What's the point? The chrome bumpers are in great shape and have an appropriate look, and up against the orange paint, the stainless trim, particularly the wheel arch moldings, looks fantastic.
Inside you'll find a restored black bucket seat interior that really adds a great effect when matched with the orange exterior. The vinyl seats are in great shape and show well, with comfortable surfaces that are barely broken in, and thanks to black carpets, door panels, and a matching black dash, the cabin has a slick all-together feel inside. Given the car's rugged simplicity, there aren't major modifications or alterations inside, just nicely restored components that more than live up to the standards set by the exterior. The SS gauge cluster is full crisp, clear units and is augmented by an auxiliary gauge under the dash, which is the lone aftermarket addition that can be picked out inside. A horseshoe shifter manages the 700R4 automatic transmission below, and an SS steering wheel is mounted on a tilt column just ahead of the driver. The R134a upgraded factory A/C unit is still controlled by the factory dials and is blowing cold, and the factory AM radio is in place although it's ready for an upgrade if you want to listen to tunes. Aside from some very minor signs of use here and there, the interior is as nicely presented as the exterior, including the spacious trunk which is properly finished with spatter-paint, a correct mat, and full-sized spare tire and jack set.
The engine is a 350 cubic inch V8 and the usual bolt-on goodies to make it a great runner. A few dress-up pieces like the blacked-out valve covers and air cleaner, an Edelbrock carb and intake manifold, and neatly organized wires and plumbing are a familiar sight that always looks good under the hood of a Chevelle. It's got enough power to get you in a lot of trouble if you let it, but it's also content to just cruise around town without getting cranky. The engine bay is tidy and clean and includes a lot of well-maintained equipment like the power brake and power steering systems, while long-tube headers feed a throaty Flowmaster-style H-pipe dual exhaust system that sounds fantastic. A 700R4 4-speed automatic transmission clicks off unobtrusive shifts and the coilover rear suspension and 10-bolt rear end hangs out back with a set of comfortable gears inside that make it feel punchy but not tiring on the highway. It tracks straight, rides smoothly, and generally goes about its business without a lot of fuss, exactly what you want from your next hobby car. Factory SS wheels are a period look and carry thick 245/60/15 front and 275/60/15 rear BFGoodrich T/A white-letter radials.
