Here is a great example of an original, well preserved classic El Camino.
The grill was replaced many years ago and is not original to this car. This is not a true SS car.
This car has been an Oregon car for many years and was owned by my friend Grant. He had it since the mid 80's and it was his daily driver until the early 90's. He loved this car and never had plans to part with it. Due to a growing family, he needed to get something with seating for everyone. He parked the El Camino under cover with plans of turning it into a show car some day. Well, as family, life, and work responsibilities happen, the car has sat on the back burner long enough. He realized that it simply was not going to get finished and I was given the opportunity to buy this great car.
The paint on this car is ORIGINAL!! (Except for small spot job on right passenger front fender, see pics below.) The paint has the great aged patina look to it and is thin in places. The body is very straight and it would not take much work to have ready for paint if you choose. The great thing about original paint is you can see what areas will need addressed and not have to worry about running into surprises that can be hidden under shiny paint. The body lines are clean, consistent, and line up evenly. The rockers are solid. The door jams are solid and clean. The lower doors are solid. The tailgate is nice, excellent edges and jams. All of the bright trim is on the car and in good shape. There is very little rust on this car, but there are a couple of isolated areas that will need repair. I have highlighted the floor pan and a couple of spots on the body in the pics below. Any rust is very isolated and would be a fairly simple weld in patch to fix properly. The inside of the bed is very straight and solid. This was a problem area for lots of El Camino's and this one is nice. Check out how nice the bed is in the detailed photographs below! Overall, the body is very solid and would make a great candidate for whatever direction you choose to go on this build. Restomod? Original cruiser? LS swap? The options are endless and only limited by your imagination!
When I bought the car it had been sitting for many years in covered storage. The tires were old, so I put brand new tires on it. I chose the classic rally wheels as I think they really look great on any classic GM muscle car. I drained all the fluids and replaced with fresh fluids. I did a tuneup and installed a battery. The engine fired up and ran well. I believe this is the original 350 but have not verified. The engine does not smoke or knock. No odd sounds, it runs smooth, and has good power. It could benefit from a rebuild on the carburetor but does run good. The transmission shifts through all of the gears well and seems to drive down the road nice. (I have only driven very short distances down the road from my house.) The steering is firm, predictable and precise. The suspension feels nice. The brakes will need to be gone through before being "road worthy". The do stop,but are spongy and will need sorted before putting on the road.
The interior is all original and does show its age. The dash has never been cut for a modern stereo and it still has the original GM factory radio. Everything is there and intact, but obviously would benefit from an interior kit. The glass is all in pretty good shape with no major cracks or chips. The floor pan is pretty much gone and will need to be replaced. Fortunately, the rust is very isolated to the floor pan area and it would be a pretty easy fix. I had priced a floor pan and interior kit locally (Pacific Northwest region) and was surprised how readily available and inexpensive it was. Check out your local Chevrolet reproduction shop so you don't have the additional cost of shipping.
This is a great solid car and a true open canvas for someone at a great price point. The car has been revived after sitting in storage for many years. It starts, runs, and stops but should be gone through more thoroughly before being declared "road worthy". I have done my best to describe this cool El Camino. Please check out the +-100 photographs as I have highlighted many closeups to reflect the overall condition of this car. I think this gives you a good idea of everything this El Camino is and what it is not. This classic car is almost 50 years old and is sold as is.
