I absolutely love barn find cars! To me there are not many things as exciting as seeing pure American history brought back to life and to relive the glory days. Here is a great open canvas for someone to give new life to or just fix what needs fixing and enjoy a non restored orginal paint car. The 60's and early 70's American muscle cars were just some of the most iconic vehicles ever built in my opinion. This is a 1972 Chevrolet El Camino that has been rescued from long term storage and is awaiting its next chapter in life. It is not an SS car, someone has just added an SS badge to the grille at some point over the years.
My friend Grant had owned this car since the mid 80's. It was his daily driver until the mid 90's when he purchased something newer with more seating for the growing family. With plans to build this into an ultimate Summer cruising weekend car sometime in the future, he protected it by parking it under his lean to. This limited its exposure to the elements and helped preserve the car. We have a very mild climate in Oregon and do not salt our roads. This was a really cool car in its day!
The El Camino has just been brought out of long term storage. I was told this was the original numbers matching motor and transmission but I have not verified that. Just last week, I purchased new tires along with new trim rings and caps. We drained the old gas out, changed the oil, cap, rotor, plugs and wires. Surprisingly enough the car fired right up! The motor sounds good and it started easily. The internals sound nice and are free from lifter noise, tick, or knock. I didn't see any smoke on startup or when warmed up.The motor is pretty dry with only normal dampness around gaskets as to be expected. It has a small block engine which I believe is the original 350 but have not been able to positively confirm this yet. The automatic transmission appears to be working properly. I took the car down the road for a short spin and was pretty surprised how nice everything felt for as long as it has been sitting. Yes it will need to be sorted out before being put on the road and driving any real distances. I'm sure a carburetor rebuild is due as well as the brake pedal is soft and goes to the floor. You are not just going to hop in and drive it to the grocery store when you get this shipped to you. It will need to be sorted out, but what a great start on this super cool El Camino!
The original interior is all there with some parts a little nicer than others. The great thing about that is that you will not be chasing hard to find small items, just clean up whats there or replace as little or as much as you would like. The factory radio is still in its place and has not been cut for an aftermarket modern deck. I have priced complete interior replacement kits and was pleasantly surprised how affordable it was. Everything from the dash pad, door panels, headliner, upholstery, and carpet kit were readily available and reasonable to buy. Ultimately, the decision on how the new owner wants to use this car will determine what to keep original and what to replace. It just depends on whether you are looking for a cool driver, parade car, or full blown resto-mod. LS swap? Classic driver mild small block? Blown big block? Patina look? Rotisserie restoration? Show car? This truly is an OPEN CANVAS that is only limited by your imagination and/or budget!
The exterior body on this car is straight and the paint is ORIGINAL. There is no hidden surprises. What you see here is what you get. I love to see what is truly there so that not only are surprises avoidable, but the issues that do exist get fixed properly the first time. There is minor surface rust present, but only a couple of places that will need any real attention. The rust is very isolated to only a couple of spots. The passenger front fender has a rust spot in the lower corner (see pics) that would be a simple weld in patch. The lower floor pans are gone and will need to be replaced, however the supports and braces are very solid. It is limited to the very bottom sheet metal of the floor pan. These are easily purchased. (I was surprised how inexpensive they are) I priced them for around 120 per side locally (to eliminate the shipping costs) so check with your local hot rod shop for pricing. The door jams look great. The rocker panels are solid. The door edges are solid and look great. The tail gate ends, jams and edges are solid and look fantastic. The frame has not been cleaned up or painted so you will see minor surface rust and dirt. This is all really solid and will clean up well. The trim pieces and bright moulding is all there and in pretty good shape. The glass is good with no cracks or major chips. This car has nice consistent body lines and to the best of my knowledge has never been wrecked. The doors open and close very nice. The hood opens and closes nice and true. The tailgate opens and closes nice. The inside of the bed is solid and free from any major dents etc. This is a really nice bed! I know its hard to believe, but some people treated these El Caminos like a truck. Not this one! The paint is thin and obviously old, but what you see is what you get. NO SURPRISES HERE!
I have done my best to accurately describe this cool classic El Camino. I could not possible describe every dent, scratch, scrape, etc. on an unrestored 47 year old car and it is sold as is.
