1959 Chevrolet Apache Napco
This 1959 Chevrolet Apache NAPCO Power-Pak 4×4 is a restored example that was optioned from the factory with a 4×4 conversion. NAPCO conversions were available on pickup trucks from a number of domestic auto makers and predated manufacturer-developed quarter and half ton 4x4s by a number of years.
This truck shows a believed-accurate 71k miles and has been with the current owner as part of a collection for the last 7 years. It appears to have lived a much easier life than most NAPCO converted trucks and is powered by a 235ci Thriftmaster straight-six paired to a 4-speed floor-shift manual transmission. This Apache has been driven less than 500 miles in the last 5 years.
The restoration was performed by the previous owner and included a repaint in Galway Green (paint code 703A). The finish is high quality with a uniform and glossy finish. Chrome is limited to the wiper arms and bases, fuel cap, door handles, hood emblem surround, and bumper carriage bolts. The remaining trim is painted white nicely finished.
The six-bolt steel wheels are fitted with a set of essentially unused Power King Super Traction 6.50-16 LT bias ply. The hubcaps are correct and feature cutouts for the front manual locking hubs. The interior fittings are in very nice condition, from the aqua and white-patterned bench seat to the headliner and roof trim pieces. Instrumentation includes a factory 100 mph speedometer and a full suite of auxiliary gauges, all of which work as they should.
The 4-speed floor shifter, pedals, and brackets are in very good condition. The fuel tank cover, jack, and tool kit are all present. This truck is equipped with a correct, unmodified 235ci Thriftmaster straight-six in a nicely detailed engine bay. The engine runs well and starts easily, and does not smoke or leak. The factory single barrel carburetor is mounted to a stock intake manifold and fitted with a correct oil-bath air cleaner. The NAPCO tag is visible above on the transfer case. All of the driveline components work as they should, including the 4-speed manual gearbox and transfer case.
The underside of the truck is clean, straight, and free of rust and leaks. The frame, side rails, gussets and supports are all coated in black and the cab mounts are solid. The suspension is standard front and rear with leaf springs, stabilizer bar, and tubular shocks. The truck sits level and shows no signs of sagging. This conversion comes from the final year of NAPCO factory conversions.
These conversions are an interesting chapter in the history of domestic pickup trucks, and this example presents very well.
