1985 Cadillac Eldorado Coupe Description

1985 Cadillac Eldorado Coupe

Nineteen eighty-five was the final year for the eighth-generation E-body Eldorado First American-made full-size car to sport a four-wheel independent suspension Two-family owned Cadillac Sandstone exterior (code 56) with matching Landau vinyl half-roof (code C04) and Medium Beige leather interior (code 692) 249 CID HT4100 V-8 engine with DEFI (code LT8) and 100-amp generator (code L02) Turbo Hydramatic 325-4L four-speed automatic transmission with electronic torque converter (code M51) and a 3.15:1 gearing (code F57) Front-wheel drive Twilight Sentinel (code T82), automatic climate control (code C68), cruise control (code K34), power steering, power four-wheel disc brakes, power windows, power mirrors, power front seats (code AG2), power locks, electric rear window defroster (code C49), tilt/telescope column (code N37), power antenna (code U75), digital speedometer (code U02) and Astro Sunroof (code CF5) Wire wheel covers (code N91) Original gold ignition and door/trunk keys

Thought of in its prime as a symbol of those who "made it big" during the go-go 1980s, Cadillac's Eldorado featured the long hood and short deck styling found on many other GM vehicles during Bill Mitchell's time as head stylist. MotoeXotica Classic Cars is pleased to present this 1985 coupe.

This particular example was made in June 1985 at GM's assembly plant in Linden, New Jersey. It has had three owners since new. The original owner took great care of it from the day he drove it off the lot until the summer of 1999, when he stopped driving it. The second owner piloted the car from 1999 until June 2010, when he was 99 years old and could no longer drive. For the next nearly eight years, his daughter chauffeured him around in the car.

Dressed in Sandstone (code 56), the car's paint and trim are in overall excellent condition, with only the most minor blemishes visible upon close inspection. The car's windows are clear and intact while the rear window comes with an electric defroster (code C49). The coupe's slim red taillights and quad headlights are haze-free and look great. The Eldo's bodywork is straight and solid and the bumpers fit tightly to the car's body. Its engine bay is extremely tidy and the car's trunk is immaculate and comes with a full-size spare tire.

This Eldo rolls on Michelin Symmetry whitewall radials surrounding steel wheels topped by wire wheel covers (code N91). The tires and wheels are in overall very good condition.

Under the car's hood is a 249 CID HT4100 V-8 engine with digital electronic fuel injection (code LT8) and 100-amp generator (code L02). Backing up this motor is a Turbo Hydramatic 325-4L four-speed automatic transmission with an electronic torque converter (code M51) and a 3.15 differential (code F57). Driver convenience features are plentiful - Twilight Sentinel (code T82), automatic climate control (code C68), cruise control (code K34), power steering, power four-wheel disc brakes, power windows, power mirrors, power front seats (code AG2), power locks, electric rear window defroster (code C49), tilt/telescope steering column (code N37), power antenna (code U75) and Astro Sunroof (code CF5).

Inside, the car's Medium Beige leather interior (code 692) is in overall very good order. The front split bench is in excellent order, as is the matching carpet. There is a small chip in the windshield at bottom left center. The car's headliner is very good condition, as is the two-spoke deluxe steering wheel (code N30). The inner door panels and instrument panel are in better-than-average shape and rounding out the interior is a factory GM Delco-Bose AM/FM stereo (code UU6) with Symphony Sound, cassette deck, extended range speakers, seek/scan and auto reverse. The digital fuel gauge not reading accurately.

Cadillac introduced the eighth generation, front-wheel drive Eldorado in 1979, largely as a rebadged variant of the Buick Riviera and Oldsmobile Toronado. Smaller, more fuel efficient 350 and 368 CID V-8s replaced the 500 and 425 CID engines.

Independent rear suspension was adopted, helping retain rear-seat and trunk room in the smaller body. The most notable styling touch was an extreme notch-back roofline. The Eldorado featured frameless door glass and the rear quarter windows re-appeared as they did before 1971, without a thick "B" pillar. The cars were not true hardtops, as the rear quarter windows were fixed.

1981 was the first year electronic "digital" instrumentation was an available option. In addition to the digital electronic climate control that was standard on all Eldorados, the standard analog speedometer and fuel gauges could be replaced with digital displays with features displaying gallons of remaining fuel and approximate range. Another engine was introduced for 1982; the 4.1L HT-4100 was an in-house design that mated cast-iron heads to an aluminum block.

Competition to this Cadillac in 1985 included BMW's 6 Series Coupe, Buick's Riviera, Lincoln's Continental Mark VII, Mercedes-Benz's 230 CE, Mercury's Grand Marquis Two-door and Oldsmobile's Toronado.

If you're fond of GM's steeply angled backlight, (so sharp it appears to go past 90 degrees from some angles) or you have an appreciation for mid-80s luxury coupes, scamper on over to MotoeXotica Classic Cars to check this one out today!
