| 1953 Buick Super Estate Wagon - 1 of 1,830 made - Golden 50th Anniversary | | | | | | | | Odometer: 28,000 | VIN: 16900263 | engine: 322 CI, 170 HP Fireball Nailhead V-8 engine | Transmission: Automatic | paint: Terrace Green Metallic | | | | | Description | | Seldom remembered as an automotive wagon master, Buick offered station wagons from 1940 and earned the distinction of building the last wood-bodied American wagons in 1953, a great distinction for this uncommon Series 50 Super Estate Wagon. The production process had a partially assembled body sent to Ionia Manufacturing Company in Ionia, Michigan where it was mounted on a jig and the ash with mahogany wood hand crafted and assembled by skilled carpenters. When the wood body work was finished the vehicle was shipped back to Buick where final assembly was completed. The Estate Wagons were created for Harlow Curtis and inspired by Harley Earl’s concept cars. Already distinctive with its distinguishing grille, sweeping brightwork, and signature VentiPorts, the limited-edition Estate Wagon was billed as being equally at ease when going to the golf club in casual attire or fitting in at a white tie and tails affair. Buick Estate Wagons were GM’s most expensive station wagons and among their most exclusive cars. This exceptional Terrace Green Metallic over virtually flawless Green and Antique Ivory interior Super Estate Wagon is believed to have 28,000 miles. As represented by the owner, the car has been sold new in Kansas and later acquired and exhibited for many years as part of the famous Jim Miller Collection in Ontario, Canada (known for his exceptional collection of low-mileage vehicles) and appeared onstage at a Beach Boys concert in Ontario, receiving public admiration and compliments from Mike Love. The car was then included in an Award-winning collection and was incredibly improved by the owner, enhancing even more the beauty of this already magnificent Estate Wagon. Stainless and chrome were removed and polished. The paint was carefully stripped to bare metal and resprayed leaving jambs and engine bay with the original finishes. The wood was selectively cleaned and treated, preserving its wonderful golden color with a distinctive patina. Original seat covers were removed, and new foam installed. Carburetor and components were rebuilt, and all seals replaced. Undercarriage was detailed, and new Firestone tires installed on Kelsey-Hayes wire wheels. Finally, the Buick Selectronic radio and clock were fully restored. The car is powered by Buick’s 322 CI, 170 HP Fireball Nailhead V-8 engine, the first V-8 in Buick’s line-up, mated with the wonderful Dynaflow automatic transmission. This magnificent Estate Wagon is equipped with heater, defroster, clock, directional signals, spotlight, Buick’s Selectronic AM radio and the expensive wire wheels with knock-off spinners combined with Firestone 8.20x15 bias ply whitewall tires. Instrumentation, gauges, lights, radio and clock work perfectly. This exceptional Buick was featured in the National Woodie Club magazine “Woodie Times”, was awarded Junior First Place at AACA 2017 and nominated for AACA National Award (highest AACA award). Naturally, the owner of this impressive vehicle will be able to participate in the most prestigious collector car events in the United States: due to the high level of awards and recognition, the Buick was already invited to be part of Concours of America at St. John’s, Boca Raton Concours d’Elegance, Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance, Greenwich Concours d’Elegance and Radnor Hunt Concours d’Elegance.
