This 1987 BMW M6 is an unmodified and unrestored example with 78k miles and a good history file from new.. Fewer than 1,800 M6s were produced for the North American market for 1987-88, and the seller says this one drives better than any he has experienced. This is consignment car from BMWCCA member who purchased the car from a fellow member five years ago and has owned it since as part of his personal collection. The sale includes extensive records dating to 1987, a fully stamped warranty booklet, and a clean NJ title. The black paint is thought to be mostly original and maintains a good shine down straight side panels. Note the clean rockers and fuel filler area and no corrosion anywhere. The car was a preservation class winner at local BMW shows in recent years. Two-piece BBS mesh wheels are fitted with Sumitomo tires, but the original metric rims are included. Window glass still bears decals including running-in instructions, while bright lenses and straight trim are on display throughout. Large DOT aluminum bumpers were retained for the 1987 model year, here showing no pitting but small scuffs to the rubber. The trunk area looks similarly clean and retains a TRX spare under its gray-painted plywood floor leveler along with a lid-mounted factory tool kit replete with hard-to-find red screwdriver handles. Inside, Natur leather sport seats have been protected with included plush covers – wear appears limited to light creasing and mild cracking on the driver’s seat bolster, occasional marking and an indent on the driver’s seatback. Stitched leather also covered the dash and most other interior trim for 1987 only, here appearing free of split seams or significant shrinkage though slight waviness is present. An Mtech 1 non-airbag steering wheel was featured for the final time in 1987. Buttons and controls retain bright lettering and showing light wear for the mileage. The original BMW stereo is included and pictured below, but has been replaced by a slightly more modern Blaupunkt. US-bound M6s featured a built-in drink cooler and both front and rear A/C, which is said to work properly. The car retains a retractable sunshade, but rear headrest trim shows some UV fading. Underhood, the North American spec S38B35 is original to the car and has no immediate mechanical needs according to the seller. A tidy engine bay shows some flaking on the airbox for the S38’s six independent throttle bodies but looks nicely detailed overall. The five-speed manual features a standard shift pattern rather than the dogleg first gear equipped on some examples. No notable fluid leaks are evident and handling is sharp according to the seller. The chassis retains its factory hydraulic self-leveling rear suspension, which reportedly works as designed. Fender wells, floor pans, chassis rails and suspension pickups all appear solid in photos. The car comes with an extensive paper history from new through the seller’s 2008 purchase, including a dealer service booklet with stamps until 2014, a handwritten oil change log from 1990-98.
