1966 AUSTIN HEALEY 3000 MK3 PHASE 2 BJ-8 SPORTS CONVERTIBLE. BRITISH RACING GREEN WITH BLACK TRIM AND WEATHER EQUIPMENT. 4-SPEED WITH OVERDRIVE GEARBOX. WIRE WHEELS. HEATER. ADJUSTABLE STEERING WHEEL. RECENT, BARN FIND TEXAS CAR WITH A POSSIBLE 22,534 ORIGINAL MILES. ORIGINAL TIRES. STORED SINCE 1980.
Offered for sale, from KURT TANNER MOTORCARS, is this late Austin-Healey 3000 MK 3. This car is the final variation of the marque and the most desirable with it's revised rear suspension, double parking/indicator lights, push-button lockable door handles, 150 bhp engine, servo-assisted improved brakes, and walnut dashboard with glove box. This popular model routinely sells for the highest price at auction out of all the production models.
This car was just discovered from the state of Texas where it has been off the road and last registered in 1980. It is still wearing it's original Dunlop RS-5 crossply tires and has a possible believed original mileage of 22,534. This car is largely complete except for the carburetor set and air cleaners.
This car needs skilled repair/replacement of all of the usual sheetmetal including the main floors, trunk floor, bottom of doors, fenders, inner and outer rockers, etc. The main frame and outriggers appear good and straight, but are scaly with surface rust that will respond well to a good sandblast. There are two isolated soft/rusty spots (pictured) that need repairing on the right chassis rail, and a soft RH front outrigger that would need replacement. I have tapped hard on the chassis and other outriggers with a small hammer and the rest of the frame rings out very solid.
The trunk lid on the car would benefit from replacement.
The soft trim has deteriorated over the time in storage. The front and rear shrouds appear actually very good.
The engine is stuck from sitting, but appears to be correctly sequenced to this VIN number, with the 29K (BJ-8) prefix for this model. This car is a very original restoration project still retaining it's original tires, Lucas headlight set, Triplex windshield logo, all original VIN and ID plates, etc. Although it is in need of a full restoration, the final result is well worth the effort culminating in a mint restored, desirable, attractive, 3000 Mk 3 BJ-8, the Austin-Healey Grand Tourer.
