Car description

For sale is a fully restored. tastefully modified and fully sorted 1974 TR6. James May called the TR6 the “blokiest bloke’s car every made!” and so it is: http://search. yahoo. com/search?fr=mcafee&type=A011US0&p=top+gear+tr6 This is a guy’s car through and through. Powerful engine. sports car handling. wind in your hair and that glorious long gleaming hood! And this one is probably the finest example you’ll see offered for sale in 2015. It looks even better in person than in the photos. but the best part is how well it runs and drives. The engine is not only fully rebuilt. but the cylinders are overbored and the head is shaved to achieve 9:1 compression. A quarter race cam adds power and throttle response. This baby has plenty of grunt and revs nicely. Not only will you enjoy the power. but the dual exhaust has a wonderful growl you can only get with a six. And this is one of the rare survivors with factory overdrive. so it completely settles down when you want to just cruise on the highway. The best part. however. is how well it drives and handles. The first thing you’ll notice on the test drive is the complete absence of rattles that dominate the experience with most older British cars. All shims and bushings were replaced when the body was reinstalled after painting. Hours spent aligning body panels yielded even panel gaps and no body rattles. The door interiors have been completely rebuilt and all rattles eliminated using not-so-secret secrets from the 6-Pack forum. Then all major body panels were lined with sound deadening panels. The doors close with a solid thunk and nothing shakes or clanks. The suspension is upgraded and very tight. It handles like a proper sports car with no body roll or pitch. Turn-in is precise without understear; and the back will rotate. but only on command. It was designed as a well balanced sports car. and the suspension modifications bring that out. Note that the suspension may seem harsh to someone not used to driving performance vehicles. but the shocks are fully adjustable to allow you to soften the ride (if you really have to). Visual presentation is excellent. The paint color is the original sapphire blue. but its thoroughly hand sanded. polished and detailed. The luster is so deep. you’ll think you can slip your hand into it. Bumpers and original luggage rack have been replaced or rechromed. so they really shine. With some minor exceptions. the rest of the original bright work is in excellent condition. Body and paint work are very good. but not perfect. If you inspect carefully. you can find a couple of blemishes in the paint and there is a small ding in the trunk lid that the prior owner failed to repair before the car was repainted. The canvas top is classy and is in good condition. but it’s older than the rest of the restoration and the inside canvas has yellowed with age. Overall. the cars exterior appearance is excellent and will carry local auto shows. The interior is very well done. In particular. it has a custom burled dash. All gauges work and have been carefully disassembled. refurbished. detailed and restored. All running gear works (yes. even the Lucas electricals). All interior surfaces have been replaced and are in very good condition. My philosophy for restorations is to fix everything and adjust it again and again until it works the way it should. I am not. however. a purist. I liked to add performance modifications to these cars when I was a kid. and I continue to believe that period-appropriate performance mods enhance a restoration. Hence. the modified engine. modern suspension. aluminum wheels and larger tires. Also. if OEM parts simply cannot perform properly. I replace them with something that will. So you’ll find an electronic ignition and a modern windscreen washer unit. I also added a stereo that actually works and accepts a USB input. If you are looking for a restored TR6. be sure to get one that is fully sorted. Restorations are tricky. A good shop can get most of the work done. but it’s never complete until a meticulous and skilled owner has driven and tinkered with it for a few thousand miles. This car matches that order like few others. Everything works. Well almost everything. Here are the few things that don’t work perfectly: (1) the windscreen wiper switch was poorly designed and no one has made a decent replacement; after three switches. I finally resigned to live with the current one that does not work on the low setting; the fast setting works just fine; and (2) you can’t lock the drivers’ door from the inside; there is a little spring in the mechanism that is broken and I have not been able to find a replacement; it latches just fine and you can lock it from the outside with the key. That’s it. I’ve disclosed everything I know to be less than perfect about the car. Restoration Details:Restoration was started by prior owner. who repainted frame and body. replaced or reupholstered seats. carpets and panels. and had engine rebuilt at about 65. 00 miles.
