Car description

This Eagle is Mostly unaltered original, in good working condition with fresh Inspection that is good until January of 2020. The only alterations are: the radio, front seats, and aluminum Jeep wheels (with no spacers/ adapters).
The AMC Eagle made automotive history as the first 4 wheel drive, unibody construction car to sell extremely well. Coming in 2nd place for the most vehicles sold with the least amount of market research, 1st place goes to the Ford Model T. The reason they sold over 220,000 units was that the Eagle drives easy like a normal car, has 4x4 capability, and looked better (in my opinion) than most of the vehicles from late 70s to mid 80s. So here you can bid on a clean, good working piece of automotive history with no reserve price.
The driveline setup on This Eagle is a 258ci (4.2L) inline 6cyl produced by AMC. The transmission is a torqueflite 3 speed automatic with no overdrive or lockup converter. 4WD is achieved by a New Process 129 transfer case which is chain driven single speed with viscous coupling unit for limited slip. This car is "shift on the fly" with a 2wd-4wd switch on the dash that works flawlessly. The front differential is a Dana 30 with CV shafts driving the front wheels with independent suspension. The rear differential is a AMC 15 (which later became a Dana 35). Basically this is as close to a Jeep Car that you will find.
I purchased this car from a local Gentleman who was 80 years old and had bought this car in the mid 90s i believe, and had maintained it and used it as his normal driver. When i bought it, it worked and drove and inspection was still good for a month, but it had a laundry list of needed repairs. So here is a list of what I've done to the car: I replaced the broken shifter handle with a good used one, I replaced the broken rear hatch hinges with a good used pair and installed new hatch lift "shocks". I replaced the exterior driver door handle, installed all new door strikers and adjusted the driver door to close without rubbing anymore. The front seats were very poor so i removed them and fit a set of bucket seats in on the existing tracks so that if someone wants to put eagle seats back in its a simple bolt-on. I replaced the ignition lock cylinder because the original would not lock anymore due to use wear. I replaced the broken radio with a CD player that has an auxiliary input in place of the defunct rear defrost switch. I replaced the leaky valve cover gasket on the factory aluminum valve cover. I installed a good 750cca battery, new front sway bar ends, new front brake pads. I also welded on a good used muffler and tailpipe, the exhaust is all a little old but is sealed well, the catalytic converter is in ok shape. I had to find a rear seat belt as the actuator was broken, so I found a brown one that works good (the maroon seat belt assembly goes with the car as you may be able to swap the maroon parts into the good actuator) I had a set of jeep wheels with a matching set of tires that I put on. The tires are all Uniroyal tiger paw 195/65/R15, 2 tires have 6/32 tread left, one has just over 6/32 and the other has 5/32, this matching set is excellent for operating the car in 4wd on paved roads. I changed the rear differential fluid, and checked the front diff fluid which was a nice color and proper level. I changed the transfer case fluid, and the transmission fluid filter and gasket. The transmission fluid is an acceptable color, but could be changed again in 1,000 miles because the pump holds as much or more fluid than the pan, this way is better for an old transmission than a flush job is. The transmission shifts good, and does not slip in any gear. With older torqueflite transmissions, when it sits for several days the pump may let fluid pressure drain down into the pan so when starting the car you will need to let it idle in neutral (not park) to rebuild pressure for a couple minutes. The current engine oil and filter have 2K miles on and I would recommend changing it at 3K mile intervals.
The only accident that the previous owner told me about was that one winter he was driving up a hill in snow and didn't have it in 4wd yet. The rear tires spun out and he slid off the road into a ditch and the car leaned against a tree, bending the front passenger door hard. He replaced the door with one from a junk yard, but it was rusted pretty bad by the time i bought the car. So I found a door in the correct colors, and drove several hours to get it. Although there is some slight differences in the paint and I did touch up two finger print size spots on the white outside and some rust underneath that I sanded out and painted. The front passenger fender shows signs of being repaired, and the paint that was used is not quite an exact match and chips easily. The front bumper is also pushed in about 1/4 inch on the passenger side.
There were several spots of rust that needed repaired when i bought the car. I cut out the rust and welded new metal in myself. Paying a shop to do what i did would probably be over $1,000. I used 1/16" thick steel for all the repairs except the one square patch lower on the driver side frame, there i used 1/8" steel. Please see pictures. There is one spot at the driver rear inner fender that has rust that may need to be repaired in a few years, I have a patch panel cut out from a junk yard car that will go with this car for that repair someday.
Emissions: All of the original emissions system and vacuum lines are in place and working with the original carburetor. It passed my local emissions testing just fine. I did adjust the idle on the choke settings, so you have 3 different choke idle settings. The electric choke works very well.
Nit picky things: The factory wiper switch went bad at some point and someone put a wiper switch in just lower on the dash from some older truck or something, it works perfectly just looks a little odd. The Air Conditioning does not work, unplugged the wire under the hood so that it does not try to come on. The passenger door mirror is glued in place, the driver door mirror moves with help. There are no power options, and no tilt steering column (you must remember to lock all your doors). The plastic interior parts in the rear cargo area are roughed up and the speaker covers have been replaced. Some light stains on the rear seat and carpet (may or may not notice depending on lighting) There are 3 places where the paint is thin like they tried to buff the paint with a buffer a little too much, the point of the hood, the driver side line of the hood, and the top of the rear hatch. Small scratches in the paint such as a spot on the driver side of the hood which looks like a snowball that was too hard hit and splattered. The paint on the door frame around the driver window is worn down to the primer in a few spots. There is road rash from small stones hitting the rear fender flares repeatedly. Plus other small nicks /chips in the paint. The windshield has a small leak when it rains, water drips from the firewall onto the driver floorboard. This is why there was rust in the driver floor, also the carpet under the driver floor mat is rough and missing a 3 chunks. On both bumpers there were silver sunoco stickers for a LONG time so that the sun faded the sunoco name into the bumper, I polished it out as best i could but it is visible at just the right angle.
The Factory Eagle steel wheels with hubcaps and "weather checked" tires with good tread will be available to the winning bidder to purchase for $20. The tires would only be good for snow use under 35mph but the steel wheels and hubcaps are in good condition if you prefer the classy look.
